Some information and history on our area.
Located in the heart of Renfrew County, Ontario, the incorporated township of Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards is a charming community with a rich history and natural beauty. Formed in 2000 through the amalgamation of the Township of Hagarty and Richards and the Village of Killaloe, the area has a deep-rooted heritage in the lumber trade and the Ottawa, Arnprior, and Parry Sound Railway.
The name Killaloe, pronounced "KILL-a-LOO," pays homage to the Irish heritage of the area's early settlers, who arrived in the early 19th century seeking a better life. The community's early beginnings centered around the lumber trade, with the mill at Old Killaloe harnessing waterpower to grind grain and plane lumber. Built in 1849 and rebuilt in 1870 after a devastating fire, the mill played a vital role in the local economy until the mid-20th century.
The village's rail connection, established in the late 19th century, remained vital until the 1960s, facilitating the transportation of lumber and goods. Although the station was demolished in 1968, its legacy lives on in the village's landscape and culture. Station Park, created in 1994 on the former railway site, features a covered bridge and serves as a reminder of the area's rich railway history.

The community is also home to a thriving arts scene, with numerous galleries and venues showcasing local talent. Visitors can explore the area's many parks and natural areas, including the Bonnechere River Provincial Park and the Algonquin Provincial Park.
The area's rich history and cultural heritage are reflected in its diverse community, which has been shaped by the contributions of Scottish, Irish, German, Kashub, Polish, and Wendish settlers. The community's history is also preserved through various museums and historical societies, offering a glimpse into the lives of the area's early inhabitants.
