"Lessons from an Ignited Life - G"

Generosity with Gratitude

I'm not sure why, but I found it very hard to say thank you for gifts when I was young. Perhaps because it was a requirement and the rebel I was, I didn't like to be forced to do anything. I did it, but it felt extremely uncomfortable.

Whatever the reason, this awkwardness around being grateful continued throughout my teens. At some point, I became stingy with my gratitude even in my thoughts until I found myself as a full on complainer.

I didn't know it at the time but complaining, or more specifically looking for things to complain about, had become a habit of my mind. I actually believe it was a major contributor to my depression.

This went on for a couple of decades.

But then I remember Oprah saying once that she attributed her success to her daily gratitude practice so I thought, "What the heck, if it works for Oprah, perhaps I should give it a try."

And so I started a gratitude journal, writing 10 things every morning that I was grateful for. And then before I went to bed, I would pray and give thanks for a few more.

Neurons that fire together wire together, as they say, and I found that as I continued to look for things to be grateful for I was actually training my brain to be more grateful. Not only did this make me feel better but actually seemed to morph my perceptions and experiences.

Fast forward over a decade later, and gratitude is more than a daily practice but a way of life. And my number one tool to keep my mind, body and relationships healthy.

Whenever I am feeling down, I look to my thoughts where I usually find a complaint (or two) at the root. I quickly turn this around by being extra generous with my gratitude. Not just privately but to anyone connected to my complaint.

It is actually quite miraculous how powerful gratitude is in transforming not only your perception of life, but life itself.

I'm so grateful to be celebrating another Mahalo Monday in Honolulu 🤙

Facing Friendly Fears

My greatest fear had always been having regrets but over the span of a couple years I had slowly started playing a smaller game, scaling back my dreams, due to some blows to my confidence and belief in what I could achieve.

But then just over a year ago a friend shared a quote basically postulating that the definition of hell was dying and coming face to face with the person you could've become.

Knowing that I wasn't even close to living up to my potential, this instantly triggered my old fear of regret.

I'm actually grateful for this fear because it caused an urgency within myself to live more fully, and to step out of my comfort zones in all areas of my life.

Yada yada yada...

I went surfing for the first time today... in Honolulu!!!

Surfing had been a dream of mine for way too many years, and one I had unknowingly let go of until recently.

More on this magical experience in another post but I know it would never of happened if my beautiful fear of regret did not exist. This past year I have made friends with many of my fears and have realized…

Facing fears leads to fun!!!

“Lessons from an Ignited Life - E”

Embrace Your Enoughness

☀️I was contemplating what to do for today’s E-themed post when I opened today’s meditation of ‘The Pivot Year’ where Brianna Wiest had kindly gifted me the answer on this, Day 92.

“Enough is not a point you reach, but a feeling in your heart. A contentment, a knowing that you are where you’re supposed to be…”

☀️ Probably the biggest shift in my self-love journey occured when I embraced my enoughness; when I stopped measuring my worth against the achievements of others, not so easy in the creative industries.

☀️ Embracing our enoughness is about recognizing and honoring our current achievements, skills, and qualities without comparing them to others. We can then set goals and pursue our dreams from a place of confidence and self-assurance, knowing that we are already enough whether or not we achieve the goals. This shift in mindset allows us to approach life more as a game, to fully appreciate our journey and celebrate all our accomplishments along the way.

☀️ When we embrace our enoughness, we free ourselves from the constant cycle of comparison and self-doubt. Instead of seeking validation from external sources or constantly striving for more, we can find contentment and fulfillment in the present moment.

☀️ But embracing our enoughness doesn't mean settling for less than we deserve or becoming complacent; rather, it's about approaching life with a sense of gratitude and abundance. And playfulness!

☀️ Embracing our enoughness means acknowledging that we are already worthy and complete just as we are simply because we exist, while also understanding that growth and progress are natural parts of life.

☀️ In fact, by embracing our enoughness, we create the space needed for growth and expansion to occur. When we truly appreciate where we are at, we are able to expand into more.

Embrace your enoughness, and watch as it transforms your life in ways you never imagined possible. 🌅

“Lessons from an Ignited Life - D”

Dare to Decide

Decide comes from the same root word as homicide, su***de, pesticide, etc. In essence, it means to determine an outcome by ‘killing’ off other options.

We live in a world where there are unlimited options presented to us in every moment so this ‘killing off’ can not only be daunting but also the cause of fear and doubt should we make the wrong decision. This can even lead to analysis paralysis where no decision is ever acted upon.

But this is only the case when we are making a decision solely from our head. When we dare to listen to our hearts and intuition, there is nothing to feae.

Over the past year, I have followed my intuition and have made some bold decisions that have helped me massively shift my life, which then cause unplanned ripple effects. My life is now almost unrecognizable to what it was a year ago, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The three big ones were that I left the film industry, moved to the Okanagan and started my online business, which is helping me fulfill my purpose of empowering others to live more ignited lives.

Now, I am spending two weeks in Waikiki, Oahu with my best friend, his son and his parents, and having the most amazing time.

And none of it would be possible if I hadn’t followed my intuition and dared to make the decisions.

I always thought Aloha was a friendly greeting but it is oh so much more. It is a way of being… love, peace, compassion.

These words resonate deeply with me. In a world that can sometimes feel chaotic and disconnected, embodying the spirit of aloha brings a sense of peace, harmony, and love.

I want to strive to be the embodiment of aloha in all that I do - spreading kindness, compassion, and positivity wherever I go, no matter the situation.

🌺 Being the Aloha I want to see in the world 🌺

“Lessons from an Ignited Life - C”

The Clarity is in the Confusion.

Whenever I feel stuck, my go-to story and emotion is that I am confused. The more I avoid it, the crazier it gets.

Yet, once I stop being afraid to look into the centre of the chaos and actually listen to what it is trying to tell me, the answer is always there.

Crystal clear.

I do this through meditation, journaling, yoga, walking or hiking.

Personally, I find talking about the confusion with others only gives it more energy.

The key is to get quiet.
