Customers for life used to be a compliment.
Now it comes with a monthly payment and a return date.
Apple's lease program is the cleanest retention machine anyone has built. Pay monthly, hand the device back at the end of the term, and the easiest thing to do next is sign again. Leaving costs more than staying, so almost nobody leaves.
Most businesses can't build that. No financing partner, no 24 month term, no line-up for the newest model.
What you do have is the part that makes the whole structure work… a customer who actually wants the next one.
That gets earned. It comes from how people feel when they deal with you, what happens when something goes wrong, and whether they believe you'd do right by them with no contract forcing it.
A customer who can't leave and a customer who keeps choosing you look identical on a revenue report. Only one of them refers you, forgives a mistake, and pays full price.
If switching costs are the only thing keeping people, you have a lock rather than loyalty. Locks get picked the moment something easier shows up.
