What is a welcome sequence and why do you need one?

If you have an email list where you send emails through an email marketing platform, you should also have a welcome sequence set up.

Video description: Meghan is wearing an orange sweater and black dress and standing with a small mic talking to the camera.

Let me explain…

A welcome sequence is a series of emails that automatically go out after someone signs up for your mailing list.

Welcome sequences are typically 3-5 emails that get sent within a week or so of someone joining your list.

The purpose of your welcome sequence is to allow new people to understand what they can expect, who you are, and what you can offer them. These first few emails allow you to build a relationship with your new subscriber before they start receiving your regular emails. If they get to know you first, they are more likely to trust you, stay on your list, and become your biggest supporters.

Your welcome sequence builds clarity and understanding but there is a balance between giving enough information and not overwhelming folks with too much info right away.

So, how would I set up a new welcome sequence from scratch?

Let me tell you…

Figure out how to actually set it up in your email service provider from a technical perspective. We use Flodesk but you might be using another provider like Mailchimp, Mailerlite, etc. In Flodesk the function to set up a welcome sequence is called a “Workflow”. In your provider it could be called something else.

I won’t go through every email provider so best to do a quick google search for “how to set up a welcome sequence in [insert your email marketing platform here]” to figure out the technical steps.

I’m going to leave you with that for this week. I invite you to figure out the technical bits to start setting up your welcome sequence now.

Next week, I’m going to tell you exactly what should be in the emails you send through your welcome sequence, when to send them, and the purpose of each one.

Social media marketing can feel like an endless hamster wheel and outsourcing it to AI might be tempting. But audiences are (rightfully, in our opinion), becoming more vocal and critical of brands who use GenAI graphics and captions. Here's one way you can streamline your social media marketing, while staying true to your brand and values, while staying away from AI.

Save this post and follow along for part 2!

Design a brand & website with us for a national non-profit 🧑‍💻

Over the past few months we worked with Women in Urbanism Canada to refresh their brand identity, and build out their new website.

Accessibility was incorporated throughout the project and we’re so psyched about the results.

If you want to work together on a project like this checkout our link in bio to book a free intro call.

3 controversial design opinions that I will stand behind ↓

1. Design happens around copy. You cannot send me your copy after I’ve already completed the design. If I designed something with space to include a paragraph that is three lines but you give me a paragraph that’s six lines long I may have to redesign the whole thing. To offer the most efficient and cost-effective solution for you, I need to get your copy before the design begins. Otherwise I would essentially need to do the design twice and charge you double.

2. Accessibility should take precedence over aesthetic. For example, having really small font on your Instagram carousels or stories feels chic, but a lot of folks can’t read it, especially if they have a smaller phone screen size than you, or low vision.

3. Simple websites can be more effective than websites with a lot of animation and movement. I’ve seen some really beautiful websites that incorporate a lot of animation and movement, and while this can show off someone’s design and development skills, it doesn’t always create the most intuitive user experience… and ultimately I believe your website should prioritize the experience of the user and be easy to navigate.

Do you agree or disagree? 🙊

If your goal is to make your website more accessible by summer, here’s how ↓

My client Women in Urbanism values accessibility and inclusion (and so do I) 🥰

They came to me with a website that didn’t meet WCAG (Website Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards and brand elements that weren’t always legible.

First I updated their branding including their logo, fonts, and color palette. I chose fonts that are simple and easy to read, created a logo that is clear and legible, and added colors with more color contrast to the brand palette so the colors would pair well together to create enough contrast.

Then I applied the new branding across their website.

I updated their website header to have a solid background. On their old site they had legibility issues with the menu text on top of images, but now it’s clear and easy to read. I updated the colors across the website to make sure they met standards for accessibility. I also restructured the copy so that appropriate headers and paragraph text were assigned across each page, making it clearer for people using screen readers to navigate.

If you’re worried that your website isn’t living up to accessibility best practices, let’s chat about it. Book a free 30-minute intro call to see if we’d be a good fit to work together on a new website.

The real reason you’re avoiding those networking events isn’t because you’re shy — it’s because your brand isn’t an accurate representation of how you want to show up ↓

Let me show you how having hotter branding can make you more confident in new spaces.

I worked with a grant consultant last year to rebrand her consulting business. Before working together she felt like her brand’s visual identity (logo, colors, fonts) didn’t represent her at all. Her old branding was put together to help her get her business off the ground a few years ago, but wasn’t crafted with strategy or intention.

After we developed a brand strategy and new visual identity for her business, she shows up at networking events and proudly hands out her card, knowing that the visuals on her card represent who she is and the clients she serves.

Having a cohesive and strategic brand helps her connect with new people and sell her offers. When your brand has strategy behind it and your visual identity matches the level of service you provide, it makes you feel more confident in your work.

If you think your branding has been holding you back from the milestones you want to achieve, let’s chat. The first step is to fill in the form on my website to book a free 30-min intro call: L in B 🩷

Brand design is an investment, and not everyone is ready to start working with a designer on branding.

Here’s what you’ll need to input if you’re planning a 2026 brand identity project with me ↓

• Identify one person from your team to be the primary contact for your project.

• Attend 3-5 meetings with me throughout the project. In these meetings you will give me context about your org and feedback on the design work produced throughout the process.

• Complete a questionnaire about your brand and what types of visuals you like. This will include questions like “How do you want people to feel when they interact with your brand?” and “What words would you use to describe your desired vibe and look?”

• Provide feedback on deliverables within an agreed-upon timeframe (either 2 biz days or 1 week).

I will guide you through the whole experience with a smooth and efficient project management process. You will need to dedicate about 10 hours of your team’s time towards the branding project.

Every project begins with an intro call to see if we’d be a good fit to work together. Book yours at the link in my bio 🩷
