PARENT CHALLENGE: EAT WHAT YOUR KIDS EAT

The other day my 9-year-old wanted a bowl of Goldfish crackers. As usual, I told him if he wanted something "j***y" like that, he had to eat something nutritional, like an apple, which he happily obliged. And it got me to thinking: what if I ate what I make my son eat? I'd be much healthier.

When I'm chiming after him to drink some water, I'm busy making my third coffee. While I'm preparing him a well-balanced lunch of protein, fruits, veggies, and some dairy, I'm stuffing stale muffins in my mouth and washing it down with, what else, more coffee. I don't get 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and instead sacrifice sleep for alone time to binge watch horrible reality TV shows.

We spend so much time focusing on our children's health and give so much less attention to our own wellbeing. Why is that?

Oh yeah- because our kids always come first.

But maybe it's time that we come in at a close second. And it's not just nutritional choices. What about limiting our own screen time? Reading more? Flexing our creative muscles and doing a craft or art project?

I'd like to issue a challenge to all you parents in the New Year: let's make our family's health a priority, not just our kids. Let's hydrate like we encourage our children to do and try to eat more balanced meals and snacks. Let's wear sunscreen, let's get regular dentist and doctor appointments, let's put time aside for naps (or at least resting), let's get good-quality sleep, and let's read and create more.

In the end, we'll all be better parents for it!

5 OUTDOOR FAMILY IDEAS
There's only one way to enjoy all that white stuff: Embrace the snow! Here are five outdoor family ideas that are loads of fun and educational too.

1. Fill up spray bottles with water and food coloring. Use them to draw in the snow or to add some detail and colour to your snowmen or snow forts.

2. Snow tic tac toe. Kids love the challenge of this simple tried-and-true game, and it's even more fun when you play it in the snow.

3. Glow sticks. Put them under the snow for some light up fun. This is a great witching hour activity to play after the sun goes down. Get a game of hide-and-go-seek with the glowsticks and see where you can discreetly tuck them - and how many you can find.

4. Ice discoveries. This takes a bit of prepwork but it's super easy to do: freeze small toys in ice and then arm your kids with protective eyewear and a small hammer to see who can "discover" what;s frozen in the ice.

5. Outdoor science lab. Kids can get super messy as long as it's outside. Set up a few plastic jars or bottles with coloured water or vinegar, and give them a bowl of baking soda. You never know what they'll "invent"!

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZING: THE AFTER-THE-HOLIDAY RESET
Phew! What a whirlwind – did you survive the holidays? Are you looking around at all of the new toys and gifts that have amassed in your home over the past few weeks and feeling overwhelmed? That’s totally normal! Here are some strategies to help you get set up for a successful start to the new year!

A great place to start is to go through all of the new gifts, toys, and stocking stuffers that you and your family were gifted over the holidays. Be sure that everything you received is something you’d like to keep – this is especially important with those small stocking stuffers! The truth is, not everything we receive will serve a purpose, and it’s absolutely okay to donate or regift the items that might not serve you or your household!

Then let’s go one step further and go through everything you already have and purge the items you might have received newer versions of. This can be as easy as taking a quick look in your cabinets while putting the dishes away to edit out what you might not use or like anymore. Take time to sort through the kids’ toys and donate the ones they might have outgrown or simply don’t play with as much anymore. This is a great step to do before the holidays, but also throughout the year.

As you’re packing away your seasonal décor, take the time to assess and edit out the items you might not love as much. Doing this while packing everything away is an easy step to take and it eliminates one more step next year when setting up for the holidays because you know you only kept the décor you love the most!

Now that you’ve kept the items you think will serve you the best, it’s a great time to set intentional goals for the coming year.

They don’t need to be called resolutions; you can call them whatever you like! It can be as simple as wanting to get into the habit of always putting your laundry away right away or a loftier goal of getting your entire home organized.
