These are the fathers of Hip Hop in Lasalle 🇨🇦⚜️

In Montreal’s Lasalle neighborhood, a group and collective of good friends from a young age became family and from the 1980s to present, they became known as the Lasalle Crew.

Many friends within this collective started Hip Hop in Lasalle in the mid 1980s (around 1983 or 1984). The two most important Lasalle Hip Hop groups that came from this circle were The High Steady Crew (also known as the High Steady Breakers) and Ouellette Park Posse.

The High Steady Crew were a Montreal breakdance group in Lasalle that were active from 1984 to 1986. The members of this group were Smiley (known as Jello Man in the group) (Don Theking’s (Don Theking) father), Sean “Fyah Foxx” Khouri (known as Splash in the group) (Sean FyahFoxx Khouri), Gilly “Krazy Legs” Carby (Gilly Carby) (Boy6lue’s (Boy6lue) father), Richard “Kid Slick” Dyer (also known as D-Trace), the late Ainsworth, Spraggy, Chubby, Troy Markie, Garett, John Colleymore, Nikolas Browne and many more.

Ouellette Park Posse (O.P.P.) was a Montreal Hip Hop group in Lasalle that were active from 1984 to 1992. They were originally known as the Devastating 3 MCs. The members were Chuck Ice (Chucky MC) (Charles Richard Husbands), Anthony “MC Twine” McCrae (also known as Prince Guarantee) (A Clay McRae), Richard “Kid Slick” Dyer and DJ Choice (choicebeats). The group was later known as Zero Tolerance.

Members of these two groups appeared in the 1986 Montreal movie Sitting Limbo that starred Pat Dillon Moore (Sistah P) (Pat_Dillon_Moore or Pat Dillon Moore) from Baum Bhum Tyme on CKUT 90.3 FM. Montreal Hip Hop pioneer and legend Mizery (Tk Mbikay) was a big fan of Ouellette Park Posse and the High Steady Crew. His brother Sans Pression (Kamenga Mbikay) was also a big fan of Ouellette Park Posse as well when both him and Mizery used to live in Lasalle.

Other members of the Lasalle Crew friend circle were Sean Lee, Dagger Notch, Freshley, Kelly, Jimmy, Killa (Chef X of One Stop Cuisine (OneStop Caribbean Cuisine)) and many more.

After the Ouellette Park Posse and High Steady Crew disbanded, the Lasalle Crew still remained good friends and family up to now.

Montreal Hip Hop history 🇨🇦⚜️

In 1993, Quebec and Canadian Hip Hop pioneer DJ Ray (QStar) (Artist : Qstar) dropped the music video for his Juno nominated song “Secret Admirer (Ooh Boy I Love You So)” featuring Montreal Reggae singer Juliet Nelson (Smurfette). This song is off of DJ Ray’s 1993 Dancehall album “The Things A Gwan” that was produced entirely by Scorpio B.

DJ Ray alongside Montreal rappers Shanwan and Flight (DJ Flight Almighty) (Randy Philips) are Quebec Randy Philipsvery FIRST rappers as they started being active in 1978.

DJ Ray was originally born in Kingston, Jamaica and grew up in Montreal’s Little Burgundy neighborhood. DJ Ray started rapping and DJing at the age of 15 in the late 1970s. In 1982, he, Shanwan, Lord Supreme, Jeffrey Joy and DJ Butcher T (Butcher T (Tony ScharschmiButcher T (Tony Scharschmidt)Hop group The Quality Crew which was also known as Triple Treach. This was the very first Hip Hop group in Quebec. Butcher T is one of the very Hip Hop DJs in Canada.

DJ Ray and his group recorded live exclusive songs for Michael Williams’ (Michael Williams) radio shMichael Williams In The City on the CKGM radio station in Montreal from 1983 to 1984. Butcher T was the main DJ of the radio show. Club 980 was the very first radio show in Canada that played Hip Hop music.

During the mid 1980s, DJ Ray started making Dancehall music in Montreal which made his popularity grew even more. From 1993 to 1997, he dropped 3 albums. His single “Secret Admirer” and his 1997 album “The Original” were nominated by the Juno Awards in 1993 and 1997, for Best Reggae Recording.

DJ Ray moved to Toronto and is now the owner of his barbershop “Q’s Barbershop” in Scarborough. He was the uncle of late Montreal rapper Green Eye Jedi who was one of the biggest English rappers in Montreal during the early 2010s.

DJ Ray is currently active in the Canadian Hip Hop & Dancehall scene under the name QStar and is popular on TikTok.

Montreal Hip Hop history 🇨🇦⚜️

Throwback to 2006 when legendary Montreal rapper Malicious (Mr Malish) (Shaun Malish) dropped the music video for his song “Heatwave” that appeared on his 2007 album “Music Starts With M”.

Malicious has been active within Montreal’s Hip Hop scene since the late 90s. He is the younger cousin of Montreal rapper R Kade (Dru Onyx) (Dru Onyx) and both of them were members of the Montreal Hip Hop group Wreckhard with Lo’Key (Lokey), Bailey and Pros N Cons K.I.D..

Malicious was also a member of the Montreal Hip Hop group Offsides with himself, Lo’Key, Bailey and DJ D.R. One. Malicious also rap battled against Jeru The Damaja at the Rialto Theatre in Montreal in 1996 at the age of 15. He is also a legendary battle rapper in Montreal. His music videos received a lot of airplay on MuchMusic and MusiquePlus in the 2000s.

Malicious is still active within Montreal’s Hip Hop scen under the name Mr Malish. He is now the coach of the Vikings De Laval Nord youth football team.

Montreal rapper ShhVelly () drops his newest album “Time Is Money 2” 🇨🇦⚜️

This album is the sequel to the NDG rapper’s 2021 “Time Is Money” album. This album contains features from Montreal rappers such as Bizzy Nizzy (), Shobiz514 (.btt), Johnny Ricochet (), Yoko Gman (.music.mtl), Scotty Free () and Biggz LV ().

Montreal Hip Hop history 🇨🇦⚜️

In 2011, Montreal rapper I.Blast (Blicky) () dropped the music video for one of his biggest songs “Born For This” featuring Kemo Soul (Keemo Soul). The music video was shot by pioneer Montreal music videographer Justin Agustin. This is I.Blast’s biggest music video to date as it currently sits at over 163,000 views on YouTube.

I.Blast is widely regarded as one of the best rappers to come from Montreal’s NDG neighborhood. He started being active in Montreal’s Hip Hop scene in the 2000s. He was singed to the Montreal division of the Reps Up record label that was ran by Montreal rapper Anon.

He released numerous mixtapes, music videos and singles during the 2000s and early 2010s. He was managed by Montreal Hip Hop pioneer Matt “Dutch” Garner who was the founder owner of EscapeMTL (Escape Entertainment) who organized some of the biggest Hip Hop events in Montreal during the 2000s and early 2010s. I.Blast made numerous appearances on EscapeMTL’s “Real City’s Finest” mixtape series. I.Blast also appeared on Labnoise’s ( ) 2010 “Step Your Bar Game Up” Montreal Hip Hop web series.

I.Blast alongside Montreal rappers Bad News Brown, Magnum 357 (now known as RVLR Magz) (), Milli Millz (now known as February Cxld) (), Green Eye Jedi, Boy6lue (), L.E.S., Novkane (), mUGZ (), Ceasrock, Guru Affiliated and more were the biggest rappers in Montreal during the early 2010s as English Montreal rappers were dominant in Quebec’s Hip Hop scene.

During the mid to late part of the 2010s, I.Blast changed his rap name to Blicky. He appeared in Drake’s () music videos “Fall Back” and “No Face”. He also was featured on Pro-V’s () song “Big Dawg Status” off of his 2023 album “North Face & Tech Fleece: The 7th Summit”. I.Blast now based in Toronto.

Kemo Soul (Keemo Soul) was one of the biggest Montreal R&B singers during this era of the city’s English Hip Hop scene.
