Spaceville Hi-Fi is a platform and sound system created by Montreal producer and DJ Don Theking in early 2023 to push the music scene in the city of Montreal through remixes, mashups, DJ mixes, archives and promos.

Spark (Mark Davidson) (Spark Davidson) is a music producer, entrepreneur and rapper from Montreal. In 1993, he started his R&B group Portfolio that had him and singers Alan Prater (AKA A.P. Solo), Chris Millington and Danny Blanco.

In 1995, Spark launched his music production company Spark Entertainment and managed R&B groups in Montreal including his own called Portfolio that sold out shows. He produced for various Montreal R&B singers including Jodie Resther, The Penny Traders and Skyy. Within the same year, he and pioneer Montreal Hip Hop DJ Fabian ‘Kickin’ Ashe produced New York rapper Father MC’s 1995 album “This Is For The Players” that Father MC recorded in Montreal.

In 1998, Spark started the music production company and business 4 In Da Morning where he managed upcoming Montreal rappers from Cote Des Neiges (Uptown). He also ran the magazine for the business to promote the business, himself and his artists. In 2000, he released 4 In Da Morning’s album “The Album (Volume One)” which was a compilation of songs from the rappers that were apart of the production company.

In 1999 after hearing about the beating of Lenard Clarke (a 13 year old Black youth who was beaten by a group of white boys in 1997), Spark released a tribute album for 4 In Da Morning called “When Lenard Crossed The Bridge” that featured 12 rappers from the crew. Spark made this album to help Lenard’s medical bills and this album and gesture led to mainstream media coverage from American networks such as ABC News, NBC, CBS and CNN Montreal News networks such as CTV and CBC. The album was also covered in the Montreal Gazette.

In 2002, Spark produced the 4 In Da Morning remix of “Buy Dat” by Young Don who was Toronto rapper Big Apple’s artist.

4 In Da Morning is also a clothing line where Speke sold thousands of hats. Spark expanded the business in Los Angeles. Compton “MC Chaps” McLean was the manager of the business. Spark is still active with the 4 In Da Morning business and he is the co-host of the “Sounds Of Soul” radio show with Rickey D on CKUT 90.3 FM.

Quebec & Canadian Hip Hop pioneer Chuck Ice (Charles Richard Husbands) is making a comeback 🇨🇦⚜️

Chuck Ice (also known as Chucky MC) is one of Quebec and Canada’s most important rappers. He has been active since 1983 within Montreal and Canada’s early Hip Hop scene with his rap group Ouellette Park Posse AKA Zero Tolerance with himself, Kid Slick AKA D-Trace, MC Twine AKA Prince Guarantee (A Clay McRae) and DJ Choice (choicebeats) and the Lasalle breakdance group High Steady Crew AKA High Steady Breakers. Chuck Ice is Lasalle’s first rapper.

After Ouellette Park Posse, DJ Choice formed Dubmatique that had OTMC and Disoul and the released Quebec’s first platinum Hip Hop album that sold over 100,000 copies. Chuck was an important contributor to the making of the album. Chuck became an inspiration to many rappers throughout Quebec. Sans Pression (S.P.) and his older brother Mizery (Tk Mbikay) were big fans of Chuck Ice when they used to live in Lasalle.

You can’t talk about pioneer Montreal DJs and not mention Love Express 🇹🇹🇨🇦⚜️

Allan Williams was born and raised in Trinidad on February 24th 1946. He moved to Montreal in 1967 during Expo 67 to seek more opportunities. After moving in the city, Allan started off as a clerk at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal.

During the mid to late 1970s, Allan started DJing under the name Love Express and with his sound system and high quality equipment, he played Soca and Reggae music. Allan was an important pioneer of Montreal’s urban and West Indian music scene.

Allan alongside DJs Starlight (Starlight International), Disco Chow (DJ Chow), Six Ten (610), Superman Genius, DJ Maddy, Lord Paul, Woodstock, Love Cooporation, Antigua Disco, Motown 2001, and DJ Lee were some of Quebec’s first urban music DJs as they were active during the mid to late 1970s and early 1980s in Montreal and played Reggae, Soca, Calypso and Soul music. A lot of Montreal/Quebec’s first Hip Hop DJs looked up to these DJs and learned from them as the majority of them were West Indian. In 1983, All of these DJs (except for Superman Genius) played at the 7th anniversary Discorama Competition in 1983 at Cote St Luc High School alongside Montreal Hop DJs DJ Ray (now known as QStar) (), Prince Charles and Sights and Sounds.

It’s important to note that during Quebec’s first Hip Hop parties in Montreal during the late 1970s and 1980s, a lot of the province’s first Hip Hop DJs didn’t play Hip Hop music alone. They incorporated Reggae and Soca music in their Hip Hop sets as the majority of Black people in Montreal are West Indian.

Allan was a mechanic at Lasalle Chrysler on Newman and he became a coach due to his deep passion for football. He was the coach of the Lasalle Warriors football team where he was well loved and respected. Allan was an important figure within Montreal’s West Indian community and he produced two of the best Carnival competitions and shows in the city during the 1990s. Allan died at the age of 79 on January 15th 2025.

Legendary Montreal Caribbean restaurant Curry House in Cote Des Neiges (Uptown) has officially closed down 😳🇨🇦⚜️

The restaurant has been in business in Cote Des Neiges for 46 years since 1980 and was a staple in Montreal’s Black and West Indian community. The last and only division of Curry House that remains in Montreal is the one that is currently based in the West Island on 4279B Boulevard Saint-Jean Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC.

Ozzie (The Wizard Of Oz) was one of Quebec and Canada’s very FIRST Hip Hop DJs 🇨🇦⚜️

Ozzie (whose real name was Oswald Wyke) was born in Montserrat on September 27th 1962. He moved to Montreal at a young age and grew up in the city’s Little Burgundy neighborhood.

He started DJing in Montreal in the 1970s as a young teenager. Ozzie became known as The Wizard Of Oz or The Wiz for short. Ozzie was one of the first DJs to play Hip Hop and Funk music in Quebec in the late 1970s.

By the 1980s, Ozzie became popular throughout the city of Montreal as a Hip Hop, Funk and R&B DJ. People from different neighborhoods in the city such as Lasalle, NDG, Cote Des Neiges (Uptown), South Shore and the West Island came to visit him by his place in Little Burgundy to hang out and watch him DJ. According to Montreal/Quebec Hip Hop pioneer DJ Flight Almighty, the first party he ever attended from when he moved to Montreal in 1978 was an Ozzie party. Ozzie also had a passion for photography.

During the 1970s and 1980s, he played music from artist such as James Brown, The Isley Brothers, George Clinton, Afrika Bambatta, Evelyn Ch*****ne King and many more. He also played Reggae music from artists such as Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh.

Ozzie was well respected in Little Burgundy and Montreal as a whole. He sadly passed away on October 5th 2022 at the age of 60. He was the older cousin of legendary Montreal Hip Hop promoter Malik Shaheed (MALIK | Public Figure).
