Who remembers this classic Montreal Hip Hop mixtape? 🇨🇦⚜️👀

This is the 2007 “Hustle Hard (Volume 1)” mixtape by legendary Montreal rapper Bless () that was hosted by Grammy nominated DJ Clinton Sparks () and mixed by pioneer Montreal Hip Hop DJ Kwite Sane (). The mixtape contains features from major American rappers such as Cappadonna from the Wu-Tang Clan, Rah Digga () from Flipmode Squad (Busta Rhymes’ Hip Hop group), JR Writer () from The Diplomats (Dipset), Twista (), Tony Touch (), Guru from Gang Starr and many more.

The biggest and most historical song on this mixtape is the “1st To Bomb” song featuring Tupac Shakur (2Pac) which made Bless the first and only Canadian rapper to have a Tupac feature on a song.

This is a rare mixtape that was lost for many years and was nearly impossible to find until it was recently found by Don Theking () who is the founder and owner of Spaceville Hi-Fi 🕵️‍♂️

Montreal Hip Hop history 🇨🇦⚜️

In 1999, Montreal rapper Ce-An dropped the music video for his song “Shinin’ On The Rise” featuring Montreal R&B singer Barnev Valsaint (). The song is the 5th track off of his 1999 album “Enterprisin’”. This was his only music video.

Ce-An is a rapper from Montreal’s Cote Des Neiges (Uptown) neighborhood. He released his only album “Enterprisin’” in 1999 on the Ravens/Tunice Records Corporation record label.

The album contains features from various Montreal rappers such as Jaihar The Big Fella, R Black, Warlock, Booz from The Former M.A.D.. The album mixed by Ce-An, NFL Brothers and the Sound Brigades Crew and produced by Ce-An, DEF STAR, Lanier, Mr. Vaine and Nazim.

The music video shows some very nice views of Montreal’s Cote Des Neiges (Uptown) neighborhood. In the song, Ce-An talks about street life and growing up in the Montreal neighborhood.

Barnev Valsaint was one of the biggest R&B singers in Montreal during this time period after the success of Dubmatique’s ( .b ) groundbreaking 1997 hit single and music video “Soul Pleureur” that he sung the hook on. As a result of the success of the song, Barnev ended up becoming the backing vocalist for Celine Dion in 1999.

Montreal Hip Hop history 🇨🇦⚜️

In 2001 during Limp Biskit’s Anger Management tour, Mr Wiggles () from the legendary New York breakdance group The Rock Steady Crew and DMX organized a rap battle between Montreal rapper Bless (who was 17 at the time) () and Yung Berg (now known as Hitmaka) () in DMX’s tour bus on his birthday.

The two young rappers battled in front of DMX and his Ruff Ryders crew, John Otto and Fred Durst from Limp Biskit, Hulk Hogan, Interscope record executive Jordan Schur and members of Destiny’s Child.

Bless is one of the most important Montreal rappers to come from Quebec who started off as a breakdancer at a young age in the 1990s. As a breakdancer, he was managed by legendary Montreal Hip Hop promoter Garry T at the age of 7 or 8. He met Tupac Shakur (2Pac) in New York at the age of 11 and was the first and only Canadian rapper to meet and rap for Tupac. Tupac gave Bless his stage name. Bless is also the only Canadian rapper to have a Tupac feature.

Bless traveled and spent a lot of time in New York as a young child and teenager to pursue a Rap career. He linked up with major American Hip Hop figures such as Limp Biskit, DMX, Jam Master Jay from Run DMC, LA Reid, Pharrell Williams and many more. Mr Wiggles from The Rock Steady Crew was Bless’ mentor and Guru from Gang Starr took Bless under his wing and both of them frequently collaborated with each other. bless collaborated with JR Writer from Dipset, Tony Touch, Cappadonna from the Wu-Tang Clan, Rah Digga, Foxy Brown, Twista and many more.

Bless became the first and only Canadian rapper to have a playable video game character based off of him as he became a video game character in the Def Jam video game series.
