Some downtown Kelowna businesses are noticing a real difference.

Staff at Mosaic Books say increased foot patrols by Kelowna RCMP and bylaw officers have led to quieter days, less loitering, and fewer incidents outside — and inside — the store.

Police say they’ve received similar feedback from the business community since enhanced foot and vehicle patrols began, noting that increased visibility downtown was a clear ask from the public.

RCMP say the additional presence is being continually reassessed based on resources and community needs, with more details expected at an upcoming City of Kelowna council meeting.

While some business owners and local leaders welcome the improvements, there are also concerns about whether the increased patrols can be sustained long term.

🚨 Scam alert in Kelowna 🚨

Kelowna RCMP are warning residents about a new credit card scam making the rounds.

Here’s how it works 👇
• Victims get a call from someone claiming to be with a major Canadian bank
• They’re told a credit card was opened in their name and used on a foreign fi****ms website
• The caller then asks them to connect with “police” via video chat
• Victims may be asked for ID, personal info, or even told to keep it secret

🚫 Important reminders from police - Banks and police will never:

❌ Ask for your personal info over the phone
❌ Request access to your financial accounts
❌ Ask you to join a video call
❌ Ask you to sign confidentiality agreements

If you believe you’ve been targeted, report it to Kelowna RCMP non-emergency at 250-762-3300 or file a report online.

A man has been arrested after allegedly violating a horse at an equestrian centre in Vernon.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP say the man was taken into custody and later released pending further investigation. No charges have been laid at this time.

The owner of Abigail Equestrian says an intruder triggered security cameras early Saturday morning. RCMP confirmed officers reviewed the footage and determined a criminal offence occurred within an enclosed animal pen. Police say the suspect fled before officers arrived.

The owner also says there is evidence suggesting other horses at the centre may have been assaulted. The investigation is ongoing.

Big upgrade at Kelowna International Airport 👏

Travellers are getting their first official look at YLW’s brand new departures lounge — and early reviews are glowing.

The expanded space offers 55% more seating, a brighter, more open layout, and new high-tech CT security screening that means:
• No unpacking liquids
• No removing laptops
• Faster lines

Passengers are calling it “very easy” and “no waiting” — with some getting through security in just a few minutes.

This new lounge is Phase 1 of the $108M airport expansion, with more terminal upgrades, a new hotel, and parkade still to come.

A Kelowna family is raising concerns after the hedge outside their rental home caught fire early Friday morning — and they believe it may have been deliberately set.

The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. at a home near Houghton Road and Kneller Road, while the family of five was asleep inside. A passerby banged on the door after spotting the flames, which had fully engulfed the hedge and were creeping toward the house.

Everyone got out safely and the home wasn’t damaged, but the incident has left the family shaken. The homeowner says they’ve previously seen small fires being set nearby and have dealt with break-ins and thefts in recent years.

An RCMP officer attended the scene and investigated. A nearby utility box was scorched, temporarily knocking out cable and internet service.

🚔 Major gang enforcement operation in Kelowna

A provincial anti-gang unit teamed up with the Kelowna RCMP for a week-long crackdown targeting repeat violent offenders.

Between Jan. 12–16, officers made 28 arrests, seized 20+ weapons, confiscated drugs, and recovered $5,000 in cash — while launching more than 20 new investigations.

The operation brought together local police and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit’s Uniform Gang Enforcement Team, using specialized training and tactics to disrupt organized crime.

Police say the focus remains clear: getting weapons and toxic drugs off the streets and keeping the community safe.

Big news for Kelowna — and for sport in B.C. 🇨🇦❄️

Kelowna has officially been named the host city for the 2028 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, marking the first time ever the Winter Games will be held in British Columbia.

From Feb. 28 to March 4, 2028, the city will welcome roughly 1,300 athletes and coaches from across the country, competing in eight winter sports across seven venues. The Games are expected to bring more than $7 million in economic impact to the region — and an even bigger boost to community pride.

Hosted in partnership with Special Olympics Canada, the City of Kelowna, and Tourism Kelowna, the 2028 Games will also serve as the national qualifier for Team Canada at the 2029 World Winter Games.

A major moment for Kelowna — and a powerful celebration of inclusion, sport, and community. 💙

🌡️ Another scorching year is on the way.

Canadian scientists say 2026 is virtually certain to rank among the four hottest years ever recorded, according to new global forecasts from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Key takeaways:
• This would mark the 13th straight year global temperatures sit at least 1.0°C above pre-industrial levels
• There’s a 12% chance the world temporarily crosses the 1.5°C threshold set under the Paris Agreement
• 2026–2030 is projected to be the hottest five-year period on record

Canada is also on track to miss its 2026 and 2030 emissions targets, even as extreme heat events become more common — including here in B.C., where warming is happening faster than the global average.

The modelling shows 2026 global temperatures could land between 1.35°C and 1.53°C above pre-industrial levels, based on data from Climate Data Canada.

Hotter summers, longer heat waves, and more climate impacts are becoming the new normal.

Population growth in the Central Okanagan hit its slowest pace of the decade in 2025 📉

New data from Statistics Canada shows the region grew by 1.2%, adding just under 3,000 people — a noticeable slowdown compared to recent years.

A few key takeaways 👇
• Fewer people moved here from other provinces
• International migration also dropped
• Kelowna is no longer among Canada’s fastest-growing cities

Meanwhile, cities like Edmonton and Calgary continue to grow at nearly 3%, while Vancouver saw just 0.2% growth.

What do you think — is this a temporary pause, or a longer-term shift for the Okanagan? 👀

✈️ Passenger feedback wins.

WestJet is scrapping a controversial seat configuration that squeezed an extra row into parts of its Boeing 737 fleet — after widespread backlash from passengers and staff.

The layout, already installed on 22 aircraft, featured non-reclining seats and the tightest legroom of any major Canadian airline. A viral video showing just how cramped it was sparked national attention and raised concerns about comfort and safety.

Airline execs say the decision to revert back is costly — but necessary.

✈️ Industry watchers say it’s a rare example of customer voices directly shaping airline decisions.

Would you sacrifice legroom for cheaper flights — or is this a dealbreaker? 👀
