Business tycoon, Vincent Astor, inherited a Bermuda estate after his father died in 1911 when the ship he was sailing on, the Titanic, sank.

In 1938, Mr Astor laid down 1400 feet of narrow gauge track to operate a miniature train. The 4-seater train offered his house guests passage to and from the main railway to his estate.

Today, you can still "track" down the orginal mini steam engine.

Costumes cover the Bermuda Gombey's bodies from head to toe and are decorated with tassels, mirrors, bells, and other decorative items and symbols.

The peacock feather headress, the painted masks and the capes are unique to each particular Gobey.

Gombey tradition is at its liveliest during the Christmas season, historically performed during Boxing Day, where the troupes would march the whole day around the island with crowds of followers.

These days, Gombey performances can be found year-round.

The Gombey is an iconic symbol of Bermuda. These unique performers are decked out in colourful, intricate costumes and masks while dancing and drumming.

The traditions have been passed down orally from one generation to the next within families.

The Captain of each troupe determines the performance direction and the style of the costumes. Subtle but distinct differences with the beats, the dances, the headress and the costumes can be found within troupes which allows them to be recognized.

On my very first visit to Bermuda, I came across a troupe of dancing Gombeys in one of the town squares. They were absolutely captivating. I found it difficult to focus on the elaborate costume details because of their frantic movements.

Ever since that fist encounter, I made it a mission to learn all I can about Gombeys. It’s a real treat to stumble upon a spontaneous performance which can happen just about anywhere.
