"Hey I'm Dan! I am island born and raised and currently live and work as a school teacher in Ladysmith. I’m a dad to two younger boys who keep us busy!
I have always been drawn to woodworking and was introduced to the laser style of cutting by a good friend and colleague. Over the past 6 months I’ve been working to create an inventory of layered wood projects that include maps, pop culture, nature, signage, and home decor ideas. Island Crafted is an online business directory that connects customers with local, handmade product creators from Vancouver Island and the surrounding Gulf Islands, providing a central platform for showcasing local makers and their products. We aim to make it easier for people to find and support small businesses within the region. The directory features a wide variety of artisans, from artists and food producers to woodworkers, soap makers, and clothing designers, and has been up and running since 2018!

Meet Vanessa, owner of from Victoria BC 🧵

Creative Hands Sewing & Crafting came out of a lifelong passion for creating ( although growing up I always said I wasn’t going to learn to sew). Vanessa is the creator behind the scenes and I am a Mom of 3 amazing kids who are all now teenagers . Creative Hands has allowed me to be home more to be available for my kids and to be able to better support my special needs daughter. It all started with sewing and has expanded to first crochet and then Tie Dye and I don’t know which I enjoy doing more !

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝘽𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙧𝙖𝙛𝙩

After 30 years as a helicopter faller, Kim sustained an injury which prevented him from going back to the woods. After 4 years of rehab and realizing he couldn’t go back to work, he kept wondering what’s next.

He missed the beauty of working in the forest so much – the smell of the trees, birds and wildlife – that he decided to start carving. Because he always used a powersaw, he made some carvings which lead him to creating natural wood creations such as benches and animals. He then thought, “Why not add some color?”, and it was then that he decided to do some silhouette sitka trees and place them on my fence panels. After the trees were created and hung he fell in love with the silhouette (west coast) look and decided to start creating wood wildlife sculptures.

This Vancouver Island woodworker’s original thought was yard art, however, his wood creations are now being purchased for fences, yards, walls (indoor/outdoor) mancaves, gardens, etc. All of Kim’s wood handmade one-of-a-kind creations are made in Nanaimo, BC. Each piece is different, designed and etched/carved and hand painted three times to with stand our weather here on the West Coast.

Meet Rylan, a Nanaimo resident who teaches grade five in Ladysmith. Earlier in life, he traveled extensively which he has combined with his passion for woodworking to create (meaning home wood studio in Korean, named by his Korean wife).

At Namu Home Studio, he strives to create handcrafted wooden maps, furniture, and home décor that blend artistry, personal meaning, and precision craftsmanship. The signature map collection, refined over years, captures the beauty of real-world landscapes with intricate detail, offering personalized pieces that evoke memories, mark special occasions, and add a sleek, modern touch to any space.

Rooted in passion for travel and shaped by a deep appreciation for place and culture, each design is forged with fine craftsmanship and laser-cut precision. He aims to maintain a uniform, cohesive aesthetic across all work, while still creating pieces that feel uniquely personal.

Rylan has over 60 different maps created for special occasions, and aims to help you commemorate these occasions or situation by adding markers to each map. It’s been a journey through refining each piece to find its most recent form, all while navigating teaching and his most important job, being daddy to his four year old Hannah. It's gotta be seeing my kids and their buds jumping in the ocean for me (they're all crazy, it's still too cold IMO 🤣🥶)

But I also love the smell of the fresh cut grass. Seeing my garden springing to life. Watching my Mason bees hatch. Noticing as Qualicum starts to "wake up" as the tourists start arriving. Viewing the returning humpbacks from the beach. So many great things!
