Robots are now doing what millions of human hands once struggled to do in China's deadly deserts. 🌱 China has deployed solar-powered autonomous robots across its northern desert regions to plant trees at a speed and scale no human workforce could match. These machines run entirely on clean solar energy, which allows them to operate deep in remote areas with no power infrastructure. Equipped with AI, GPS, cameras, and sensors, they analyse the terrain, select the best planting spots, drill the soil, insert a sapling, cover it with sand, and water it in. The entire process runs with almost no human supervision. Scientists and engineers developed these robots to support China's legendary Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program, also known as the Great Green Wall, which has been running since 1979.
This program is the world's largest afforestation effort and has already helped reduce China's desert coverage. 🤖 In late 2024, China completed a 3,046 km green belt fully encircling the Taklimakan Desert, once known as the Sea of Death. Farmers near that desert now sleep without fearing sandstorms destroying their crops. Researchers presented designs for fully photovoltaic-powered tree-planting robots at the 2024 International Conference on Power Electronics and Artificial Intelligence. As this technology scales, fleets of these robots may one day restore ravaged landscapes not just in China but across the entire planet.
