Many who watched the Oscars last night may or may not have recognized all the Canadian talent and ties to the films of 2012. As always Canada had a strong showing, which bodes well for our first annual Canadian Screen Awards (http://www.academy.ca/awards) and the budding talent of tomorrow.
Here is a summary of most if not all the Canadian involvement in he 2013 Oscars:
Argo:
Storyline: Joint CIA-Canadian secret operation to extract six fugitive American diplomatic personnel out of revolutionary Iran.
Victor Garber is the second cast member from Toronto's legendary 1972 stage production of "Godspell" to portray Ken Taylor on screen. Martin Short played Taylor in a 1982 skit on SCTV.
When the film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film drew criticism that it unfairly minimized the Canadian government's role in helping the six Americans they were sheltering escape Iran. Director Ben Affleck eventually agreed and rewrote the postscript text which states that the CIA's operations complemented the Government of Canada's efforts and the affair has become an admirable example of international cooperation.
Life of Pi:
Though Yann Martel, author of Life of Pi, was born in Spain, his parents are French Canadian, and is recognized as a Canadian author.
