Last week I completed the University of Helsinki's Elements of AI course! It's an early milestone on my machine learning journey but one worth celebrating, for sure 🙌

If this is a topic you're interested in but don't know where to start, I definitely recommend this course (it's free!). It's mainly about understanding the theoretical overview and there are resources to remind you how to multiply fractions if, like me, it's been a real long time since your last math class.

Isn't it a little late for this?

Well, yes. But we're only a little over 3 weeks in. There are 49 still to go.

I won't begin predict what's ahead, 2021 has shocked me so many times already. I'm just going to try and get ready for it.

Back online that is!

I was without internet for a few weeks and although it was fun at first, the novelty wore off real fast. Like, "you've used 50% of your data in one day" fast. Yikes!

That's my overall internet usage though - not just social media.

Like many others have this year, I've taken some time away from social media and am becoming much more intentional in the ways I want to use it.

So, yes, I'm glad to be connected again, but there's no denying that a break can be a very good thing!

I doubt I'm going to be the only one to share this message today. So many of us tuned in to 's Small Business Reimagined Town Hall last night and while it gave me a lot to think about, this phrase from really struck a chord.
We're going to get things wrong. That's okay. We'll learn the lessons and then DO BETTER.
Imperfect action is the only way forward.

I know that a lot still needs to be torn down.

And so many of us still have a long way to go in even comprehending the extent of the issues.

I have yet to find the words.

So here's an expression I saw on a protest sign in Montreal many years ago. It still inspires me.

I've been doing really well at reducing my food waste lately. Discouraged from making inessential trips to the grocery store, I've become a lot better at eating what I already have at home. Better, but I'm not perfect.

Even if I have something delicious planned for dinner... on more than one occasion I've seen a neighbour walk home with a pizza box and turned right around to go get a slice of my own.

What can I say? I crown pizza the king of convenience foods and I am its loyal subject.

Oh yeah, and visibility works wonders.

Here's me a few weeks ago, having curled my hair just for the hell of it.

Since I haven't been wearing makeup, I also haven't been washing it off and now I feel like my skin's been getting dull. So I'm hoping that wearing a little bit of makeup again will propel me back into my skincare habits - and as a bonus, I'll actually look and feel like myself again.

Is anyone else finding it's time to bring back some old routines? Or did you keep them going this whole time?

Have you seen that supercut of all the covid commercials? Or maybe you've noticed for yourself that every ad on TV feels eerily... familiar.

Well, yes. We have all felt the same lately. And we've all wanted to say and hear the same things - that we're all still here, together.

But are we still able to hear it? Can you make real connections when you repeat what everyone else is saying?

Of course not. That's never worked.

You need to be different.
You need to be genuine.
You need to be you.

Now more than ever.

I've thought a lot recently about the world we're all waiting to return to. And about the fact that we won't be returning to that place at all.

We're not going back. Whatever comes next simply can't be the same as before.

The good news is that we get to shape it. It's up to us - you and me! - to decide what our future will look like. And there's no reason we should keep playing small.

Universal basic incomes, much more support for healthcare workers, and a healthier planet? I hope so.
