Is your business LGBT friendly? Have you ever given any thought to it?
Here are 6 ways you can modernize your operations in a respectful way:
1. If you use intake forms of any kind, ask not only for first and last name, but as well for preferred pronouns. Because not everyone may know what preferred pronouns means, "How would you like to be addressed?", as an additional option to first and last name, is a great work around that will help your LGBT customers feel seen.
2. If you're not sure of the gender of your client or customer, it doesnt need to be awkward. Simply ask the person if they have preferred pronouns they would like you to use - if they do, your kind consideration will go a long way.
3. Avoid gendering people in your workplace in general. Use "folks" instead of "guys" when addressing a group, and practice saying "they and them" to and about your co-workers, in emails, meetings, and in conversation. Before you know it, your everyday vocabulary will be q***r friendly.
4. Celebrate pride on your social networks when its that time in your city. To many, pride week (or month) marks a time of love and inclusivity; and you want your business to be included! Show your support and be an ally.
5. Let people who have transitioned know that your business is a safe space. Many companies have begun including the trans flag on their website, social channels, and even their store windows, to let perspective LGBT customers know they are welcome and respected in their establishment.
6. Have a meeting with your staff - if you have never addressed these points with your team the time is now. Provide them with answers and resources that they may need to understand the importance of LGBT friendly workspaces. You can avoid bad reviews and unhappy patrons by making sure your entire company is aware of your non-discrimination policy - and if your policy needs an update, let your staff know that part of your new non-discrimination policy is the avoidance of gendering.
Put a little love in your heart, and your business, by doing all you can to support your LGBT customers ❤️
