This ampersand will be called ‘A Labour of Love’, for a few obvious and maybe not so obvious reasons. I can only imagine the time I would have put into this if I did not cut myself off as I generally only give myself a few hours on each of these ampersands. But I couldn’t help myself I think there was probably about 6 hours of trial and error. 

First off; when you put dry rice covered in glue onto paper it curls the paper over time… so you have to be sure to have a sturdy surface I used transparency paper (used for those old projector machines). I managed to find some in my office. It worked. 

Second, I also thought I would see if Jessica Hische (the superb lettering artist) herself would give me her blessing to use one of her custom ampersands. And she said yes!!! Oh hurrah. Lots of love goes to her for that! 

I put the rice on a white background as the original ampersand resembles a lace fabric. 

Lastly, I was going to originally do the piece out of sugar. Which of course who doesn’t love sugar. But because we are in the week of the Lunar New year I decided to go with rice. 

Chinese rice folk art dates back to the end of the Qing Dynasty (1636 to1912). And thought this was fitting as I could accomplish the intricacy of the ampersand with fine grains of Rice.

The City of Burlington for its 150th anniversary, has commissioned a series of public art pieces along The Beachway during Ontario Culture Days, running from September 22 – October 15, 2023.

A 3 week event, Culture Days is held in Burlington including arts and culture experiences outdoors, indoors and online.

As I noted on the sign I have a love for flowers, herbs and anything botanical in nature, and my passion project, The Edible Ampersand has been brought together here with edible flowers representing the beautifully green city of Burlington.

Hello all...I know it's been too long! But happy National Ampersand Day Sept 8th 2020. 

My husband and I are expecting our first child in November. Which explains the dry spell on this channel, but before the little one pops out, I will try and get in a few ampersands in a mini-series of my cravings during pregnancy. Hope you enjoy! 

First out of my Craving Edible Ampersand series is Fuzzy Peaches... yum!  A craving I had in the end of second trimester.

Happy New Year
It’s been an amazing year with lots of projects and busy times! So this holiday I did slow down a bit and ofcourse dove back and made some ampersands. Gingerbread anyone?

I know it has been a while I will try my best this year to pump out as many ampersands as I can. But as we know it is a side project. To many more ampersands in 2020!

When I began my business in 2014 I did not even imagine getting some of the recognition that I do, and I am forever grateful. I began the Edible Ampersand project to grow and educate myself first hand of the wonders of Food photography, which now has grown into a full blown side project. I have taken a little break but hope to get on the bandwagon soon with some fresh great Edible Ampersands! Thank you, A' Design Award & Competition.
