US TikTok Users Flock to RedNote Amid Looming Ban Threat....
With a potential TikTok ban just days away, many US users are migrating to a Chinese app called RedNote, now the most downloaded app on Apple’s US App Store as of Monday.
Often referred to as "TikTok refugees," these users are driving the surge in popularity of RedNote, a TikTok-like platform widely used among young people in China, Taiwan, and other Mandarin-speaking regions. With approximately 300 million monthly users, RedNote combines elements of TikTok and Instagram, offering a platform for lifestyle tips on topics like dating and fashion, particularly favored by urban young women.
The uncertainty stems from a pending Supreme Court decision regarding a law that sets a January 19 deadline for TikTok to sell its US operations or face a nationwide ban. TikTok has vowed not to sell and argues that banning the platform would violate free speech protections for its 170 million US users.
Meanwhile, RedNote is welcoming its influx of new users. The hashtag "TikTok refugee" already has 63,000 posts, with guides helping newcomers navigate the app and learn basic Chinese phrases. One US user humorously posted: “To our Chinese hosts, thanks for having us—sorry in advance for the chaos.”
However, RedNote is not without its controversies. Reports of censorship, especially around criticism of the Chinese government, have surfaced. Public officials in Taiwan are restricted from using the app due to perceived security risks associated with Chinese software.
As US users join en masse, some Chinese users have joked about being “Chinese spies,” referencing US concerns that TikTok might be used for espionage or political manipulation.
Despite these concerns, many users are undeterred. For some, the switch is even seen as a form of protest.
Even if TikTok avoids a ban, the platform may face challenges from a growing user migration to alternatives like RedNote. Some social media enthusiasts are already finding themselves spending more time scrolling on RedNote than on TikTok.
