I thought I would share this important article from the CBC on sexism in the liquor and brewing business. It is hard to read but reminds me of all the great women I have seem come and go from the industry because the sexism was too much to deal with. I have seem it prevent good staff, managers and associates get the pay/position or recognition they deserve. I saw it occur in liquor retail, on premise and the brewery side. I fired staff for this type of behaviour on more then one occasion. I often had to demand/flight for raises or promotions for female staff that would have otherwise been automatic for male staff. I would like to say this type of behaviour has changed in the BC Liquor business but it is still wide spread in many workplaces. One of the changes I believe could have the biggest impact would be for companies to write and implement mandatory policies that ensure female representation in upper management and a no tolerance( termination) policy when sexism occurs in the workplace.
The craft beer industry has been rocked by hundreds of stories of sexism, misogyny, abuse and assault against women that have come to light on social media — allegations that stand in stark contrast to the feel-good and friendly image the sector has long conveyed.
