Wondering how the Instagram algorithm actually works?
You'll often hear the IG algorithm referred to as a singular concept, however, we're here to tell you there are really multiple algorithms at play!
The algorithms have one goal: to make you spend more time on the app by delivering you content that you enjoy.
Let's breakdown the algorithm for feed posts in 2023:
The algorithm for feed posts takes into consideration of 5 main actions:
📣 Time spent
📣 Likes
📣 Comments
📣 Saves
📣 Taps on profile
Instagram will add and remove signals and predictions over time, better understanding which each user is interested in. These signals include:
📣 Information about the post (if it's a photo or a video, when was it posted, how many likes it has, etc.)
📣 Information about the poster (how interesting are they to you, are you friends with them, etc.)
📣 Your activity (do you watch a lot of videos, what type of content you typically engage with, etc.)
📣 Your interaction history (do you like or comment on the poster’s content, etc.)
Basically, to ensure the platform is showing you content you enjoy, Instagram will monitor every interaction you make on the app.
However, there are some additional factors when IG selects which content to put on a users home feed, including:
📣 Image or video quality
📣 Originality
📣 Watermarks
📣 Violations to Instagram's Community Guidelines
📣 Reported content
A tip on seeing how your content preforms is to monitor your analytics often to understand which content delivers the highest engagement on your account. We hope this helped!
