Are you just starting to watch Stranger Things or have you been around since day 1???
Stranger Things is almost 10 years old....How old were you 10 years ago?
Stranger Things first launched in 2016. My son was two years old, I was....30. I was NOT watching it -- I wasn't even a frequent user of Netflix.
In its early days, viewership estimates put Season 1 at roughly 8–10 million households watching in its initial release window.
Strong — but nowhere near the cultural phenomenon it would become.
Fast forward to 2026 / today.
Stranger Things is now one of Netflix’s most-watched series of all time:
140+ million households watched Season 4
1+ billion hours viewed across the series
Still pulling in new viewers nearly a decade later (hi, it’s me)
That growth didn’t come from reinvention.
The core stayed the same.
The world expanded.
And the super fans never stopped talking about it.
New audiences didn’t need a relaunch.
They arrived because the reputation kept repeating.
That’s marketing.
Repetition isn’t for your existing audience.
It’s for the next one.
Reputation is built through repetition not reinvention.
I unpack this fully in this week’s Substack piece.
