Every year, I find myself sitting in the audience at PosAbilities Stage Door, and every year they remind me why I fell in love with theatre in the first place.

This is a company that celebrates people with barriers by giving them something profoundly powerful: a stage, a voice, a story, and the opportunity to create something entirely their own.

And then they go and make something brilliant.

I laugh until my eyes water. I watch moments of extraordinary honesty and creativity. And somewhere between the laughter and the applause, I usually find myself completely overwhelmed by the sheer inspiration of it all.

Because this is theatre in its purest form.

It isn’t about perfection. It isn’t about making everything polished and predictable. It’s about people coming together to tell stories, take risks, make each other laugh, surprise us, move us, and remind us that every person has something worth saying.

There is something wonderfully wholesome about watching a room full of people experience that together. No pretence. No barriers between the stage and the audience. Just humanity, imagination, and a whole lot of heart.

PosAbilities Stage Door doesn’t simply put on a show.

They create a space where people get to be seen, heard, celebrated, and brilliantly themselves.

And every year, I leave their theatre laughing, inspired, and feeling just a little more connected to the beautiful, messy, ridiculous thing we call being human.

That’s what theatre is all about.

There is something quietly spiritual about photographing beauty in black and white.

Strip away the colour and suddenly there is nowhere for the image to hide. No distractions. Just light, shadow, texture, expression and the emotion living somewhere between them.

Simplicity is rarely simple. It takes restraint. It takes patience. It takes knowing what to leave out.

But when you get it right, something remarkable happens.

The image stops asking you to look at it and starts asking you to feel it.

Perhaps that’s the lesson in simplicity itself. We spend so much energy adding, fixing, chasing and complicating, when sometimes the most overwhelming beauty is waiting for us in what remains after everything unnecessary has been removed.

Black and white photography reminds me that less isn’t less.

Sometimes, less is everything

There are few things more beautiful through a photographer’s lens than a great beard.

The texture. The shape. The way it catches light. The way it frames a face and gives it character, history and just the right amount of “I probably know how to chop wood.”

And yes, I can grow one.

That’s not the problem.

The problem is surviving the awkward middle-aged porcupine phase while it grows in. The itch. The unevenness. The questionable life choices staring back at me in the mirror.

So I shave it off.

Every. Damn. Time.

Which is why, as a photographer, I have enormous respect for men who actually have the patience to let the beard become the magnificent photographic landscape it was clearly destined to be.

I’m not beardless.

I’m simply beard-impatient.

And yes… I’m jealous as hell.

As an event photographer, it’s easy to get swept up in the glitz, the glam, the lights, the fashion, the spectacle and most certainly the sound. But what stayed with me most about working with over the last four days was something far brighter: the feeling of love moving through this community.

I heard someone say:“If you are looking for community, look around, you are already here.”

And that was it.

Every hug in the hallway. Every tearful conversation after a performance. Every dance floor eruption. Every quiet moment between friends. I wasn’t just documenting a conference, I was witnessing people finding themselves, each other and their community. What a blessing to be a witness.
