An advisor friend of mine spent 15 years building his practice on referrals.

He tried running ads to business owners and got nothing back. The people clicking weren't who he was looking for.

We rebuilt the whole approach. Instead of asking for a meeting right away, we led with something worth their time first. Built the trust layer before the ask.

First case closed within 90 days. $25K annual premium. Under $4K in ad spend.

And the calls were different after that. People already knew who he was before they got on the phone.

Swipe through to see exactly how we built it.

Your referral source spent years earning trust with someone, then used it to vouch for you.

The least you can do is make sure your online presence backs them up.

No reviews. No testimonials. No case studies. Nothing that tells that person someone else has been through this and it worked.

The trust transfer has to happen online. If it doesn't, that referral goes cold and you never find out why.

What does someone find when they look you up today?

When a referred prospect Googles you, the first thing they're looking for is confirmation.

Confirmation that you're who your referral source said you were.

If they find a generic profile that could belong to any of the hundreds of other advisors in your city, that confirmation never comes.

The fix isn't being on every platform. It's being specific about who you help and why, so the right person reads it and immediately thinks, this is exactly for me.

That's what holds onto a warm referral.

Running ads and asking for a meeting right away?

Here's what's actually happening on the other end of that.

A business owner sees it, doesn't recognize your name, and keeps scrolling. The ones who do click and book usually aren't serious. They're not the client you're looking for.

The people you want to be talking to need to see you first, hear from you, and decide you're worth their time before they get on a call.

Build that layer first. The quality of the conversations you have after that is completely different.

I burned through $6,000 running ads before I figured out what I was doing wrong.

That wasn't a budget. That was a lesson.

I kept going straight to the ask. No education layer. No trust building. Just an ad pointing to a booking page. And I kept wondering why the people clicking weren't serious.

No smart business owner sees an ad and immediately hands over the keys to their finances to someone they've never heard of. The moment I stopped skipping the trust-building layer and gave people a reason to pay attention first, everything changed.

The conversations got better. The people showing up were actually qualified.

Don't skip the trust layer.

Fewer people coming through. Way higher quality. That was the trade I made for an advisor friend a few years back.

Ads to an explainer video and a downloadable guide. Email sequences that kept running in the background.

By the time someone booked a call, they'd already gotten something valuable from him. They already knew who he was.

That's a completely different conversation than someone who clicked an ad thirty seconds ago.

Give them a reason to pay attention first. What happens after that is a different quality entirely.

The referral came in warm. Your connection had already vouched for you.

But between that conversation and booking a call with you, they went online.

And what they found didn't match what they'd been told.

No content. No case studies. Nothing that confirmed you were who your referral source said you were.

That person cooled down. And you never found out why.

It wasn't your fees. It wasn't your services. It was what they found when they went looking.

The advisors I've seen hit MDRT and Top of the Table consistently have one thing in common.

They stopped chasing volume and found a type of client where one case changes everything.

Business owners. Incorporated professionals. People with retained earnings and real tax problems inside their corporations.

One case in that market is worth about ten in the individual or family market.

If you've been grinding policies and wondering why the math isn't working, this is usually why.
