Sorry friends, getting a new job won’t solve the actual thing keeping you stuck in overthinking, swirling and avoidance around what to do about work aka being career confused

Whether you’re in a role that’s meh, you recently left, or you’re firmly in the “is this really it” camp, what makes it hard is actually quite simple.

To know what to do next, you have to know what you want 🤯🤦🏽‍♀️

And while that sounds simple, it’s actually complex.

Hence the spinning and avoiding.

It’s tough being a mid or late stage career pro. You might think you should have this figured out by now. It might bring up shame or embarrassment. And not knowing, especially when you’re smart and capable, is enough to make anyone go a little bonkers.

So you think about it and update LinkedIn, maybe consider some more education….but somehow you still feel exactly the same and the swirl continues.

Been there. I see you, friend. And please know you are not alone.

Knowing what you want can be hard. So let’s start small.

Try this….

1) Track what lights you up and what drains you for two weeks. The big stuff and the small stuff. Make it easy on yourself. Note on your phone. Tell a robot. Whatever works.

2) Use the small moments to start learning how you actually know what you want. Bath or shower? Pizza or salad? How do you know?

Knowing yourself is like a muscle. It needs to be nurtured and tended to and it can grow quicker than you’d think.

I know you want to jump straight to “what’s the job.” But that’s like trying to do 10 chin-ups when you can’t yet do one. (Still a work in progress for me too, honestly. 😂)

Start small. You’ll get there. I promise.

And when you do…the next thing will actually align with who you are and what you want. Imagine that!!

Happy noticing and tracking

PS - I made a freebie walking you through the overall process in more detail. Comment “clarity” and I’ll send it to you.

“I loved it until I seen the social media fingers and it gave me the ick”

I don’t actually know what social media fingers are… and that’s beside the point

Interestingly it’s given me more conviction. Clearer boundaries. And a lesson in letting things go, water off a ducks back……except here I am posting about it so….work in progress.

So thank you internet random.

Onward and upward we go. 🚀

What are you working on?

It felt like a sibling battle inside my head.I have a 3.5 and 5 year old at the ripe ol’ age of 48 so I know what that looks like. 😂

There was…..

Bram Parker - the professional, linear, logical, task-oriented one who can spot risks 10 steps ahead and has already started mitigating them.

Yolanda - the magical one who just wants to go with the flow, see what happens, and trusts the universe completely.

Sally - the silly one who only wants to laugh and truly cannot understand why anyone would take life so seriously.

Bram Parker didn’t approve of Sally. Sally couldn’t figure out why Bram was always trying to control everything and make such a big deal out of nothing.

Bram Parker took center stage for a long time.

Until he got tired. And I got tired. And Yolanda and Sally started feeling suffocated, like they’d been waiting in the wings for long enough, they needed some air.

So I made friends with them.

I got curious about what each of them actually wanted for me. What they were afraid of. What they needed to feel seen.

And once I saw them, really saw them, they started to see each other.

Now they share the stage. Not always gracefully. But together.

And now I have choice, which made everything easier.

Bram could chill out, Sally could play and Yolanda…well she’s just taking each moment breath by breath as the magic unfolds.

I learned that the logical one and the magical one and the ridiculous one are all necessary. Who knew. 😂

This is what real career clarity looks like, not just “what job do I want next,” not silencing the loud ones or hiding the embarrassing ones, but all of you finally having a seat at the table, curious, collaborative and ready to explore what you actually want and how to make it happen. 🪄

That’s me. What about you?

Let’s get to know each other, who’s sitting around your table? What would you call your inner personas? 👇

I didn’t just ask “what do I want to do next”.

I got clear on where I was now, for data and to feed Q2- “where do I want to go next”

Mapping any journey requires knowing the starting point and not just the practical/tangible but the energetics and what I was feeling.

It’s hard to explore possibilities and think creatively when you’re maxed out and closed down.

So Q1 to career clarity is “where are you now”?

-What working?
-What’s not?
-How important is getting clear?
-What would change for you if you were clear?
-How much energy do you have for the exploration?

Start there.

And if you are maxxed out as many mid/late stage professional woman are you might be better off starting at a tree. Going for a walk. Having a cry.
Once you have some space then you answer “where do I want to go” aka the living vision.

Deep breaths.

PS I’ll make another one of these on ways to create space, and one for the next 2 questions and the undercurrent. Come hang out and follow along!

I zoooomwd out.

Way out into the life I wanted.

I made that more exciting than the fears of change.
It took a while for the pieces of the puzzle to click and to work on all the “stuff” that came up in the process (stay tuned for part 3)

And I’m so glad I did.

Check out part 1- what I thought would help but didn’t and come hang out if you want more on the messy middle.

PS - starting Thursday me and a bunch of lovely ladies are going to do this over the course of a few weeks. Comment “next” and I’ll send you the info

What do you think? Can you have quality of life and $$ and title? Is it by nature a trade off?

Quality of life has become more important to me than anything else.

I have clients who genuinely have created lives where they have both. It’s amazing and inspiring and I’m wondering how common it is?

Is there an age/stage element to it? Certainly in my 20’s and 30’s title etc felt more important than it does now.

I’d love to know your take?

It’s weird. I grew up with encyclopedias and a landline.

In university I’d go to the internet cafe just to see if my ex-boyfriend replied to my email.

A time when the deal was: go to school ➡️ get a job ➡️ more school ➡️ “better” job. keep going till you reach the top. cha ching on your RSPs.

It’s weird to be both excited about a new way of doing things and also kind of terrified. because... well. see above. 😅

But I tend not to give up. and I believe in magic. so let’s see how much fun I can have moving my offline business into an online space.

Follow along if you’re up for an adventure. 🫶

I am almost 50 so…..I guess gravity is winning this round. Does it win all the rounds!?

if this is of interest comment NEXT to grab a spot in my 4 week live group immersion 👇

the internal conflict mid-career professional women feel is painfully real and takes up a lot of mental space and energy that could be used for other things. like sourdough making. or walking with a weighted vest. And obviously counting grams of protein.

most women don’t stop long enough to ask “what do I actually want next?”

they ignore the internal banter and hope it’ll go away. or decide to deal with it later…

-after the next performance cycle.
-when that big project is done.
-once the new CEO comes on board.
some other time. that’s when.

but if you can see the internal chatter as useful and understand what’s happening inside, then you have a choice. and all those voices become helpers on the road to clarity.

I’ve walked this road myself many times and I’ve supported hundreds of clients through it too.

over 4 weeks in “What’s Next” you’ll explore

-where you are now (what’s working & what’s not),
-where you want to go (values, strengths, vision, persona’s, vision)
-how to get there (gap analysis, action plan)
-And all the internal things that tend to get in the way like beliefs, patterns, and those voices pulling you in different directions.

by the end you’ll walk away with clarity on what you want and a plan to get there. with clarity, not just courage.
