Tell us what has changed over the last 37 years. Demands of basic respect and dignity are being met with state-backed violence. Ethnic and religious supremacy are guised as nationalism. People continue to be displaced, lynched, silenced. Anyone who is a minority is branded as dangerous.

Women, to this day, are suffering in multitudes of ways. Many, in their old age are still waiting for their missing sons and husbands to come home, or from the hands misogynists. The rest continue to fight to survive at Delhi’s borders at the — where their cries have fallen on deaf ears for 6 months and counting.

The 1984 Sikh Genocide is only 1 generation old. The pain of it is cross-cultural and transnational. From Panjab to Myanmar, Kashmir to Palestine, Canada to Colombia, nobody is free until we all are free.

Don’t stop asking questions. Don’t stop digging to discover the truth. Learn about the violent oppression of Sikhs. Learn about your cultural history. Only then is how we can continue advocating for human rights.

The remains of found by the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nations community is a loss that is still relevant today. This is a part of an ongoing genocide and erasure of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Residential schools are a violent, oppressive part of our history. Their effects are still seen today – and they extend into many current and distressing issues such as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Mancamps, the stealing of Indigenous land that is now known legislatively as “Crown land” among many more issues that continue to harm Indigenous communities.

Forensics helps lead the way. Canada – including descendants of colonizers and settlers – must hold space and all mechanisms of support, especially financial, to uncover the deeply horrific realities of colonization and residential schools to hold space for real Truth and Reconciliation. We must be held accountable to continue to do the work of advocating for Indigenous communities globally. Because right now, most Indigenous communities are fighting tooth and nail independently and continue to live in cycles of trauma and harm to be seen, heard and seek justice.

Arts & Culture non-profits have found innovative ways to maintain the superstructure of culture that is embedded into our societies globally. However, much of this goes without acknowledgement of the Indigenous and Black roots and influences upon which the foundations of all of our cultural sectors are built. Because the top dogs in this sector have traditionally been white people and men upholding patriarchal capitalistic structures.

We hear it far too often non-white, and non-male artists, creatives, and arts professionals give it their all to receive zero to little pay for their labour — and when they are on the tail end of such gross human rights violations, they are subjected to further gaslighting, manipulation and abuse.

Speaking up about this should not jeopardize someone’s career. So many arts organizations and businesses have been founded on the labour of racialized people. The BC Alliance of Arts & Culture, who pride themselves in being arts sector leaders in BC must be held accountable and display true leadership by being equitable.

We stand with Naomi Grace. We stand with all artists who create and give to be met with contract violations, and who continually fight for themselves, for fair compensation of their labour, and the love they pour into the arts sector to maintain the absolute necessity that is arts & culture.

At the beginning of May, we organised a petition calling on the Shri Amarnath Shrine Booard (SABS) to cancel the Shri Amarnath Yatra, which brings over 600,000 pilgrims to Kashmir.

3 weeks later, we are at 5,400 signatures and firm cancellation of the Yatra is yet to be publicly announced. Here are more ways to help.

In our time experiencing allyship with the Kashmiri community, we have witnessed severe discrimination and attempted stripping of agency from the people of Kashmir from religious and national extremists. Just take a look at our Petition post’s comments to see for yourself. Kashmir needs global solidarity and humanity to uplift Kashmiri voices and agency from occupation, silencing, and censorship.
