I realize it's been a long time since I posted here. So today I would thought I share this The simple beauty of raindrops hanging off of bush on my walk through the park. Today I got to spend some time with my beautiful daughter who is in school and on her way to a fabulous career. I'm super proud of her and this decision she's made for university. But I can't honestly say I'm not afraid for her that she will be moving far from all to a completely different realm from her perspective. She leaves the warm and comfortable confines of the West Coast to the harsh reality of the central Canadian prairies. I think it's going to be a bit of a shock. Go back now just type the picture enlarge it if you have to and look at the beauty of those drops reflecting the world around them. We should all try and better reflect the world around us.

Moments of Zen

Today's inspiration:
Bad Habits. We all have them. Today I learned that bad habits cannot be stopped. That's right. They have to be replaced. Bad Habits ( and Good Habits) fill a place in time in our psyche. They are deeply linked to certain chemical and hormone releases which is why chemical addictions cause cravings. They are ritualized events that we do an a certain timeline. Replacing them with a different concept that can help release similar body chemicals like serotonin and dopamine is the fastest and easiest way to change a habit. It may take time to figure out a replacement type therapy for you, but it will be worth it.
"John" for example, finally decided to quit smoking. But instead of struggling with going cold turkey and the withdrawal symptoms many suffer with, he changed the pattern instead. He realized that a smoke made him feel good for a few minutes, and he had a sense of excitement or joy for a while after. He knew that small bursts of exercise also release those same feelings. So instead of a smoke he replaced it with a jog. the next day he went a little faster. And the next day he ran, hard. It was short but effective. After just three days he no longer wanted a smoke but looked forward to a run. after a week instead of many short runs throughout the day he planned for 3 at good times for him. In 21 days "John" changed from being a smoker to a daily runner. He felt tons better, looked better, and was obviously becoming healthier.
Think about your bad habit or habits, and what might you be able to substitute instead for a short while. try it for a few days, thaen a week, and finally for the month. I hope it makes your feel a real change in your life.

There is something warm and fuzzy about having a simple homemade dinner with good friends. I don't know if it's the camaraderie or the laughter, the political discussions or the catching up n the odd news of the world, including that extremely odd duck that is the so called leader of the free world, who is destroying the very fabric of the country just south of us. But I digress. On the deck, on a warm summers evening is and always will be one of my favorite things.

Tonight we barbecued some exceptional pieces of pork, boiled up some fresh local corn and added a generous helping of a vegetable and herb, pasta salad. Now I say "we" but I really mean my good friend JG, who as always, was a generous host. While the meat sizzled in the background and the corn bubbled along we enjoyed a Mohito. Now if you don't know, a Mohito is a fabulous elixir of rum, mint leaves, lime and soda, with a touch of simple syrup to add a hint of sweetness. The mint and lime just smell like a summer party in your glass. They are always delicious, and this is where we started to catch up on the past week, making small talk and discussing the news of the realms.

Once dinner was served we added a red wine; a nice, deep, red, California Zinfandel. It was an excellent match for the spiced, grilled meat. We shared an outdoor summer meal with good hearts and more chatter while we fended off the occasional wasp. They always seem to rudely want a bite of our food, and are the most common of uninvited guests. It is getting into August already which means the wasps are going to start getting more even more aggressive about building their larders for winter. On top of that we saw a flock of geese in that unmistakable V formation heading down to Beacon Hill Park no doubt, but that too reminded me that summer is always gone faster than we ever imagine.

As the evening wore on we lit a fire and enjoyed another cocktail that included another very summery twist, the blackberry. From a sunny August day to a lovely summer evening around a fire (which I am sure is caveman TV because we can all still just sit and watch the dance of the flames.) It was a great way to spend a Saturday evening. Finally we came inside for a late desert of homemade cheesecake. Now I am not a great lover of desert but cheesecake always seems light enough and not to sweet enough to be decadent.

The wasps and the birds remind me that time, like summer can be short, so we need to do these things. Visit friends, eat great dinners and enjoy all of your days not just the perfect summer ones. Until next time, cheers!
