I almost cried while reading this email from my client again. It brought back so many memories from two years ago. It was one of the happiest moments of my journey as a Virtual Assistant, and I can honestly say that I miss this client.
Before becoming a VA, I was working as a dishwasher at a Korean BBQ restaurant. That's where I first learned about virtual assistants. To be honest, I didn't believe it at first. I couldn't imagine that a job like this was real. that you could actually earn money without leaving your home.
One of the people who inspired me was a YouTuber named Momshee Sheena Santos. I started learning from her because her tutorials were simple and easy to understand.
Whenever there were no customers at work, I would spend my time studying and researching since we had internet access. Little by little, I started to understand what being a Virtual Assistant was all about.
I started creating my resume, built a portfolio, signed up on OnlineJobs.ph, Upwork, and every platform I could find. Then I started applying for jobs even though I made a lot of mistakes.
More than a year passed, and I still couldn't land a client. I started telling myself, "Maybe this isn't for me." So I went back to applying for corporate jobs.
Then, on April 12, 2024, everything changed.
Someone sent me a message. At first, I honestly thought it was a scam, but it wasn't.
He was looking for an Executive Assistant. I immediately told him that I had no experience.
His reply was something I'll never forget:
"That's okay. I'll teach you everything."
Every time he gave me a task, he would record a step-by-step video explaining exactly what to do. There wasn't even an interview, I was hired immediately.
Then... boom.
I received my very first payment: ₱1,500. It was just for a trial task that lasted around four hours.
I can't even describe how I felt. I was so happy, but at the same time, I was terrified. I kept thinking, "What if I make a mistake? What if I'm not good enough?"
Thankfully, everything went smoothly. We had a great working relationship.
Until one day...
It was over.
And yes, it was my fault.
It's a lesson that I will carry with me forever, and I hope other Virtual Assistants can learn from it too.
If a client gives you an opportunity, do everything you can to help their business grow. Don't take that trust for granted.
I made a mistake that I can't share publicly, but what I can say is this:
If you're an aspiring VA, make sure you actually know the skills you put on your resume. Don't list something just because it looks good if you don't even know the basics.
Most importantly...
Never stop upskilling.
That's the biggest lesson I've learned.
Today, I'm still trying to get back on my feet.
I still want to work as a Virtual Assistant, and if I'm blessed with another chance to work with a client, I'll make sure I do things the right way this time.
