A mission statement and a vision statement are both crucial for a company's identity, but they serve different purposes and focus on different timeframes.
A mission statement defines what a company does now. It describes the business, its objectives, and how it will achieve those objectives. It answers the question, "What do we do?" or "Why do we exist?"
A vision statement focuses on what a company aspires to be in the future. It paints a picture of the long-term goals and a desired future state for the organization. It answers the question, "Where are we going?"
In short, a mission is about the journey, while the vision is the destination.
