5 things African parents do that quietly destroy a child's confidence without realizing it
We love our children deeply without question but love alone is not enough if the things we say and do are sending a different message.
Here are 5 things that happen in many African homes that slowly chip away at a child's confidence:
1. Comparison
Why can't you be like your cousin? Every time you compare your child to someone else you are telling them that who they are is not enough and that you need them to be someone else. That message follows them for decades.
2. Conditional praise
When we only celebrate achievement and go silent about effort, children learn that their value is tied to their performance. They become adults who achieve endlessly but never feel enough.
3. Dismissing emotions
A child who is told their feelings are wrong does not stop feeling. They stop showing you. And a child who hides their feelings from you will hide everything else too including the things you most need to know about.
4. Public humiliation
Correcting and embarrassing a child in front of others, relatives, siblings, strangers does not teach them a lesson. It teaches them that the people who love them are not safe. And safety is the foundation of confidence.
5. Never saying I love you
Many African parents show love through provision and sacrifice and that love is real. But a child also needs to hear the words. I love you. I am proud of you. You are enough. Say it. Even if nobody said it to you. Especially because nobody said it to you.
Your child is not asking for a perfect parent.
They are asking for a present one. One who sees them, hears them makes them feel safe and tells them again and again that they are enough.
