The brake booster plays an important role in stopping cars equipped with disc brakes. This device is located under the hood, providing additional force to the brakes and helping to stop the vehicle. Without it, the stopping distance will sharply increase, making it more likely for drivers and passengers to collide during emergency stops.
Inside the brake booster, two chambers separated by diaphragms act as a vacuum to allow air to flow into the engine through the intake port. Pressing the brake pedal will open a valve, and air will be sucked into one side of the booster, allowing the vacuum on the other side to attract the diaphragm. Then, a rod connected to the brake pedal assembly passes through the center of the diaphragm and reaches the master cylinder piston.
When the force applied to the brake pedal is transmitted, the diaphragm will also pull the rod and increase the force on the master cylinder piston. The cooperation of several functions can make the car decelerate quickly and easily. By releasing the brake pedal, the valve closes and the car's operating system returns to balance. If you notice any of the following adverse booster symptoms in your car, please take immediate action and do not ignore them. Even if the symptoms are mild, it can make your travel a hazard.
1、 Emergency brake pedal action
A poor brake booster will make it harder to press the brake pedal, and when the booster fails, it loses its ability to provide additional power to the master cylinder piston.
2、 Increased braking distance
Sometimes the brake booster gradually fails, resulting in a decrease in the performance of the car, which is generally more difficult for the owner to detect. If you feel that you must stop before braking when the car is in motion, please check the braking device in a timely manner. If the car's bearing shells and rotors do not appear to be damaged, the cause of the symptoms may be due to a broken brake booster.
3、 High brake pedal position
With the greater resistance of the brake pedal under pressure, you may also notice that when the car engages the brake, the pedal's "stroke" is less than normal. If the booster chamber is very unbalanced, the pedal reset may be much slower than normal.
4、 Poor engine function
The holes on the diaphragm allow the booster to suck air into the car's intake system, which can affect the degree of fuel mixing in the engine due to the connection between the booster and the main intake port. In newer fuel injection vehicles, this will reduce fuel economy. In older cars, a brake booster malfunction may lead to poor engine operation, resulting in insufficient fuel in the car's cylinders. If there is no adequate gas cooling at this time, the friction of engine parts will increase, and the temperature of engine components will also increase, leading to premature ignition of the car (the fuel ignites before the spark plug ignites). If the ignition is continued at this time, early ignition can cause the valve of the car to be burned or the piston to be damaged, requiring very expensive maintenance costs.
5、 Test brake booster
From the moment the engine is turned off, the brakes will be applied multiple times. (The design of the brake booster allows the mechanism to maintain sufficient vacuum to apply the brakes once or twice when the engine is not running, which helps to stop the vehicle in the event of an engine malfunction.) Next, gently press the brake pedal when starting the engine. Normally, you should feel the car pedal slightly released, If the car pedal becomes very stiff or no change is felt at all at this time, it indicates that the car's brake booster has failed.
