Let me tell you the story of Yiwu’s “trading sugar for chicken feathers.”

When it comes to small commodities, many people may have heard of Yiwu. In China, there is a county, not very big, yet through the small commodities it sells, people can sometimes predict the results of the U.S. elections or even the World Cup champion in advance. This is our hometown.

Today it is well-known far and wide, but Yiwu people all know the story of “chicken feathers for sugar.” In the past, our fathers carried shoulder poles, walked from village to village, collecting chicken feathers saved after families slaughtered chickens, and exchanged them for children’s candies, or for women’s needles and threads. Such small trades were very precious to us, sustaining family expenses with hard work and sweat. The sound of the rattling drum still remains in childhood memories.

“Chicken feathers for sugar” is the spiritual symbol of our city, and also the spirit passed down from generation to generation among Yiwu merchants: no matter how small the business, we devote ourselves fully and never fear trouble.
