The Shed Typeface | Hieroglyf
Nominated in: Visual Communication

The Shed Typeface
Made to commission, produce, and present the full spectrum of performing arts, visual arts, and pop culture, The Shed is a large-scale cultural institution located at Hudson Yards, Manhattan. The bespoke brand typeface Shed is designed to function as the main component of their visual identity, applied across a score of digital and printed media. The typeface features exaggerated, almost parody-like, ink-traps and semi-seriffed characters to appear geometrically monumental in large sizes and jaggedly low-res in small sizes. Shed’s condensed proportions match the logotype which is set in a font designed by artist Lawrence Weiner, whose work constitutes the conceptual foundation for the visual identity developed by Other Means. The Shed features a total of six styles allowing use for both text and display.

Hieroglyf
The typeface Hieroglyf is designed for the exhibition Hieroglyphs at the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK) in 2018. The exhibition highlighted Danish symbolism, an arts movement known for its use of organic imagery referring to the spirituality and soulfulness of nature, growth, and fertility. Hieroglyf is an attempt at encapsulating these traits in letterform. It does so through hand-drawn references such as flourishes, swashes, flared serifs and rounded counters which are all kept in place by the letters’ stringently flat tops and bottoms. The typeface consists of a single upper-case display-style which was used for headlines and titling in the catalogue and exhibition space alike.

Objectief Nederland is a project conducted by the artists Reinjan Mulder and Cleo Wächter in 1974 and 2017 respectively. In an endeavour to give an objective view of The Netherlands in '74, Mulder applied a square grid to a map of The Netherlands, determining 52 places to be rigidly photographed (North, South, East, West). In 2016 the project was exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and in 2017, Cleo Wächter was commissioned to re-photograph the project and document the changes that had happened since the project's first production.

I designed a poster (A3 RISO) and a website supporting the project. The front of the poster displays the grid drawn by Mulder, which is extended and applied to the poster's general layout. The website serves as a mere teaser for the project, showcasing "then vs. now" comparisons of the images produced by Mulder and Wächter. The photographs of Objectief Nederland were exhibited at Landschapstriënnale 2017 in Nieuw Vennep.

Computational and traditional methodologies of visual production merge in the recent exhibition 'Figuration and Algorithms' by Kristian Touborg at Galerie Mikael Andersen. Done in a mere 7 days, I had a blast designing the catalogue with Kristian.
