Discovering the Dominican Republic: A Personal Journey
With 800 miles of stunning coastline, the Dominican Republic is home to more than 200 beaches, ranging from secluded stretches of sand with dramatic limestone cliffs to serene shores with calm, turquoise waters. This country truly is a paradise of pristine white sand and crystal-clear seas.
I never imagined I would find myself in this breathtakingly beautiful country, but here I am. Growing up in India, most of us don't know much about the Caribbean, let alone the Dominican Republic. Our history books mainly mention two sailors from the Age of Discovery, Christopher Columbus and Vasco De Gama. Columbus, in 1492, landed in the Americas, specifically what is now Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, while Vasco De Gama reached the western coast of India in 1498.
Like many, my perception of Latin America was shaped by movies and shows about drug lords and cartels. These depictions made me wary of living here for a few years. Countless hours of online research seemed to confirm these fears, with many sources warning of potential dangers.
However, after nearly a year of living here and exploring numerous beaches and places, I've found reality to be quite the opposite of those grim portrayals. This experience has taught me the importance of travel and stepping outside our comfort zones. You can't truly understand a place through research or media alone. Our world is full of wonders waiting to be discovered, and we owe it to ourselves to explore and be amazed by its beauty.
So, dare to step out, travel, and experience the wonders of our planet firsthand. You might just find yourself in a paradise you never knew existed.
