funded PhD position at the Estonian University of Life Sceinces, to begin in (2026/2027)

The proposed PhD project is entitled:
“Evaluation of Feeding Behaviour and Biomass Dynamics in Estonian Grazing Pastures Using Integrated GPS, Drone Imaging and Grass Analysis Approaches.”

Brief summary of the research topic
Grassland ecosystems play a central role in livestock production, biodiversity conservation, and carbon cycling, yet they are highly sensitive to grazing pressure, climate variability, and management practices. While global research has demonstrated that grazing can substantially alter biomass distribution and ecosystem functioning, there remains a lack of mechanistic understanding of how livestock behaviour interacts with spatial and temporal variability in pasture resources, particularly in northern temperate systems such as those found in Estonia.
This PhD project addresses this gap by combining ecological theory with advanced monitoring technologies. The research will integrate drone-based multispectral imaging, GPS-based livestock tracking, and laboratory analysis of grass composition to investigate how pasture biomass availability and quality influence feeding behaviour, spatial utilisation, and animal performance.

Application process and requirements
To apply for doctoral studies, candidates must submit their application as follows:
Estonian applicants via SAIS (http://www.sais.ee) between 1–15 June 2026;
International applicants via DreamApply (https://estonia.dreamapply.com) between 1 April – 1 June 2026.

Incomplete studies do not prevent submitting an application; however, it is essential that the degree has been completed (thesis defended) and the diploma issued by the start of the studies.
Further information for applicants is available:
in Estonian: https://www.emu.ee/doktoriope
in English: https://www.emu.ee/en/doctoral-studies-phd

Given the interdisciplinary nature of the project, suitable candidates may come from backgrounds including veterinary medicine, animal science, ecology, environmental science, agronomy, or related disciplines, ideally with an interest in data-driven and technology-supported research.

I would be grateful if you could disseminate this opportunity through your networks and relevant channels.
Please feel free to contact me for further information or to discuss potential candidates.

Doctoral studies represent the highest level of higher education, comprising 240 ECTS credits. Completion of a PhD program generally requires the publication of scientific articles and culminates in the defense of a doctoral dissertation, after which the candidate is awarded the Doctor of Philosophy...
