A Force Multiplier isn't a title. It's a measurable function.

In every team I've worked with over 30 years โ€” Olympic squads, Cirque touring companies, intelligence units, C-suite tables โ€” there's a small minority of people whose presence visibly multiplies the output of everyone around them.

And a much larger group who don't.

The math is brutal. Pull the Force Multiplier out of the room and output drops 30, 40, sometimes 60%. Not because they did all the work โ€” because of what their presence enabled.

Repetition uses the right words. It restates the strategy in slightly different language. It produces nodding.

Translation takes the strategy and makes it operational at every level. The intern leaves knowing what to do Monday morning. The VP leaves knowing what to stop doing. The CEO leaves knowing what to escalate.

If your team leaves articulating the strategy in their own words, you're multiplying.

If they leave repeating your words back at the next meeting, you're not.

There's a temptation, when you work with veterans, to try to become one of them.

You pick up the slang. Learn the acronyms. Start every keynote with "I want to thank you for your service." Post on Veterans Day. Wear the t-shirt with the flag on the sleeve.

I understand the instinct. I felt it myself.

But after 30 years in this work, here's what I'll say that most civilian advisors won't:

Trying to become one of them is the fastest way to lose them.

The veterans I serve don't need another civilian playing dress-up. They need someone who knows exactly what he is โ€” and what he isn't โ€” and brings the value only an outsider can.

I call it the Outsider Advantage. Four disciplines:

A veteran named me that.

When Thomas Long and I co-founded ๐—”๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—ซ Business Alliance, we had one rule we werenโ€™t going to compromise on: the values come before the membership, not the other way around.

Thatโ€™s not a marketing line. Itโ€™s a screening filter.

Hereโ€™s what it looks like in practice.

Honor isnโ€™t a posture. Itโ€™s a track record.

Every veteran in this room has already been tested in a context where lying, posturing, or self-promotion got people hurt. We donโ€™t need to ask if someone has it โ€” we can hear it in the first five minutes of conversation. Honor in ๐—”๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—ซ means you say the hard thing in the room, not on the drive home.

Integrity isnโ€™t agreement. Itโ€™s alignment.

I disagree with members of ๐—”๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—ซ on plenty of things โ€” politics, business strategy, life philosophy. Thatโ€™s not the standard. Integrity here means your word and your action are the same shape.

If you say youโ€™ll show up to a memberโ€™s launch, you show up. If you say youโ€™ll make an intro, the intro happens. If you canโ€™t, you say so on day one โ€” not week three.

Service isnโ€™t volunteering. Itโ€™s a default setting.

The civilian business world has trained people to think about service as something extra you do after the work is done. In APEX, service is the operating system. Members move on each otherโ€™s behalf without being asked, without expectation of reciprocity, and without making it into a story.

Thatโ€™s the part civilians sometimes canโ€™t read โ€” because theyโ€™re scanning for the catch.

There is no catch.

The catch is that to get in, you have to be the kind of person who would have run those values anyway.

Three patterns. Every veteran founder Iโ€™ve watched struggle in civilian business shows at least one of them.

After 30+ years coaching people through high-stakes performance โ€” Olympic athletes, Cirque du Soleil performers, combat veterans, executives โ€” Iโ€™ve started to spot these on the first conversation.

They walk into a civilian boardroom and start explaining their service like a rรฉsumรฉ item. โ€œI led a 40-person platoon in Iraqโ€ gets a polite nod and zero contracts. The translation is the trap.

Veterans donโ€™t need to explain what they did โ€” they need to position what they carry.

Decision-making under pressure. Trust built before words. Mission integrity. Civilians arenโ€™t shopping for your MOS. Theyโ€™re shopping for someone whoโ€™ll do what they said theyโ€™d do.

๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป ๐Ÿฎ โ€” They isolate the cost of failure.

In service, you had a unit. The weight got distributed. In business, most veterans I see try to absorb every loss privately โ€” the bad deal, the canceled contract, the partner who flaked โ€” like itโ€™s a personal failure of character instead of a normal business reality. That isolation is what kills momentum. Not the failure itself.

This is the big one. Veterans donโ€™t need more rooms to walk into. They need one room where they donโ€™t have to perform. Where the standards are pre-installed. Where Honor, Integrity, and Service arenโ€™t a slogan on the wall โ€” theyโ€™re the price of admission.
