A Force Multiplier isn't a title. It's a measurable function.
In every team I've worked with over 30 years โ Olympic squads, Cirque touring companies, intelligence units, C-suite tables โ there's a small minority of people whose presence visibly multiplies the output of everyone around them.
And a much larger group who don't.
The math is brutal. Pull the Force Multiplier out of the room and output drops 30, 40, sometimes 60%. Not because they did all the work โ because of what their presence enabled.
Replace them with someone average and the team adapts in a quarter.
Replace them with a Force Diluter โ someone who silently subtracts energy, clarity, and trust โ and the team never recovers. You just don't notice the damage for 18 months.
If you lead anything, the question is: which one am I?
Three measurable inputs separate the two.

High energy is a performance. You can spot it in the parking lot. The bigger the audience, the bigger the energy.
Transferable energy is the opposite. It doesn't perform. It transfers. People who spend an hour with a Force Multiplier leave thinking more clearly than they came in. They didn't get a pep talk. They got recalibrated.
If you leave a leader's office more tired than you arrived, you've been in the presence of a Force Diluter โ regardless of their title.

Repetition uses the right words. It restates the strategy in slightly different language. It produces nodding.
Translation takes the strategy and makes it operational at every level. The intern leaves knowing what to do Monday morning. The VP leaves knowing what to stop doing. The CEO leaves knowing what to escalate.
If your team leaves articulating the strategy in their own words, you're multiplying.
If they leave repeating your words back at the next meeting, you're not.

Borrowed trust comes from your title, your logo, your network. It works in the first 90 days. It expires fast.
Earned trust is built one relationship at a time, in conditions where the person had no obligation to trust you and you had no leverage to demand it.
That's why Thomas Long called me one of the only civilians he trusts. Not because of my resume. Because of three years of small moments in which I showed up exactly the same way whether anyone was watching or not.
Three measurable inputs. Each builds over years. Each collapses in minutes.
The leaders I've coached at the highest level all share one thing: they take this audit seriously, before someone else does it for them.
Most won't.
That's the whole reason it remains valuable.
