What if the most impactful part of your story is something too painful, too private or too unsafe to share?

You don't need to share it!

You're the one deciding which parts of your story you share. No matter what every marketing guru says.

You are in control of your personal brand storytelling.
You get to share what feels right for you.

And you can still use storytelling intentionally to build trust, create genuine connections and attract aligned clients.

Besides THAT one moment, I'm sure you have other meaningful moments you'd feel comfortable sharing that can highlight the benefits of what you offer.

The key?

Identifying them.

First, look at your work and what you offer. What differentiates your approach?

I see two levels:

- Why your solution vs other ways of solving the problem:
a book, podcast, DIY option, AI tool, etc.

- Why you vs others offering something similar:
what is distinctive about your approach, and how your combination of background, experience, values, personality and expertise shapes the way you work.

Once you're clear on that, explore your journey and identify moments that illustrate those points of differentiation.

They don't need to be epic or dramatic.
They need to be meaningful!

For example:
- for me, getting excited when the first public library opened in my neighborhood
- for a web designer client, drinking a glass of w**e in her garden

My story illustrates how I've been passionate about stories since a child.
My client's story helps illustrate her ability to work intensively using the right tools and techniques to get amazing results that her clients can enjoy.

I know how overwhelming the advice to “share your story” and “be vulnerable” can feel.
I know how contradictory it can feel to try to be visible and invisible at the same time.

Now, I feel so fortunate to help others identify and articulate personal stories that provide context, connection and contrast.
But most importantly, I get to guide you to do that on your terms, without feeling pressured to share something you don’t feel comfortable sharing.

Does this resonate with you? My DMs are open🌻

I want to share with you an exercise I try to practice every week:

🔖 STORYTELLING INSPO
Training ourselves to notice storytelling inspiration everywhere.

A podcast. A photograph. A shop sign. A piece of art. A conversation. Something you notice “in the wild.”

Pay attention to what works when you are the one receiving a story.

What makes you curious?
What makes you feel something?
What makes you remember it?

Then use those observations and practice applying those lessons when you are the one telling the story.

Notice. Analyze. Apply. Practice.

Storytelling is a muscle. And practice can be playful, curious and impactful.

___

Here's what I collected in week 37 of 2026:

🔖 INSPO 1:
Listening to the amazing photographer Cristina García Rodero. A life of passion for capturing life and humans with her camera.

· Lesson: How she plays with light and darkness to help her emphasize the story she wanted to tell through the picture

· Practice: How you can emphasize certain elements of your narrative (and go lighter on others) to help your message get through more clearly.

🔖 INSPO 2:
Reading “Las mujeres de Federico”, by Ana Bernal-Triviño and Lady Desidia.

· Lesson: How to play with the narrative rules and have characters from different books by an author sharing a room and speaking about what they would ask the author.

· Practice: Imagine that several of your mentors and people you admire sit down together. What would their advice for your audience be?

🔖 INSPO 3:
Learning about the “Correct the Map” campaign and the new UN approved world map reflecting the true size of Africa.

· Lesson: There could be a distorted version of reality that we haven’t questioned is true because it was “official”.

· Practice: Think of a well-established concept in your industry. Ask yourself, “What if that weren’t true?” Share your thoughts.

____

🤩 Now it's your turn!

What storytelling inspiration have you noticed this week?

Share an example with me.

You don’t need one big, epic story to make your personal brand storytelling work.

That’s one of the ideas behind my Story Connectors Framework.

Instead of starting by asking, “What’s my story?”, start with your business:

What are the key factors, benefits or ideas you want people to understand about what you offer?

Then look back at your journey and identify specific meaningful moments that can help illustrate those ideas.

Each Story Connector brings together:

→ one key factor or benefit of your offer
→ one meaningful moment from your journey that you can use as a bridge to emphasize the value you provide to your clients

The result is a set of stories you can use with flexibility, depending on the context, instead of feeling the pressure to build everything around one big personal narrative.

This clip is from my conversation with Bianca Smith on the Simplified Marketing Podcast, where we talked about storytelling without oversharing, using everyday experiences in your marketing, and why you don’t need an “epic” story to build trust.

Thank you, Bianca, for having me! 🌻

How personal do you actually need to get to build trust?

I know that when talking about building trust through personal brand storytelling, there is a lot of "be vulnerable", "share your authentic self", "open up" ...

And that can feel challenging if you're a reserved person or if there are difficult parts of your journey that you don't want (or don't feel safe) to share

I feel that sometimes there is some confusion between being personal and being private.

Your audience would appreciate hearing personal stories to understand
your context (why you do what you do),
your values (what is important to you) and
your unique approach (how you do things in a different way, what makes you different).

Use strategic storytelling to highlight your unique combination of personality, background, experience, expertise and values.

But that doesn't mean you need to share beyond your boundaries.

You can be a private person (like I am!) and still create genuine connections through your stories.

You can decide to not share a specific meaningful moment, even if it was a big turning point in your life.

And for the meaningful moments you decide to share, you don't need to share every detail. You can focus on the emotions and the lessons you got from that moment: what the experience meant to you, what you learned from it or how it impacted the way you approach your work today.

You can absolutely preserve your privacy and create genuine connections.

Choose intentionally which stories YOU want to share and how to articulate them in a way that makes their connection to what you offer and the value you provide clear.

If you'd like personalized support identifying which personal stories are relevant to share and how to do it with intention, clarity and confidence, I can help you.

I'm just a message away. Let's talk! 🌻

Strategic storytelling can help you turn visibility opportunities into trust and aligned clients.

But...
storytelling can feel overwhelming:

- What if I don’t have an epic story?

- What if I have so many lived experiences that I don’t know which ones are relevant to my audience and my business?

I got you!

Instead of looking for one big, epic story, I created a framework to help you identify meaningful moments from your journey that highlight the benefits of what you offer:

The 10 STORY CONNECTORS

Would you like an example?

Something my clients value is my love for stories and how passionate I’m about helping them identify and articulate theirs.

A moment that I use as a bridge to illustrate that passion is when the first public library opened in my neighborhood and how excited I was to have access to so many books and stories to explore.

Now it’s your turn!

___

PRACTICAL EXERCISE
(Save this post for later!)

→ Step 1:
Think of a skill that comes naturally to you and is valuable to your clients.

→ Step 2:
Look for a moment in your journey that highlights how this skill comes naturally to you. For example, think of a time when you used this skill in a different context (a past work experience, your academic background...).

→ Step 3:
Practice explaining how this skill was helpful to you or others in that moment. Then, use the story as a bridge to highlight how this same skill is valuable to your clients today.

What helps someone trust you enough to buy when what you're selling can't be seen or touched?

When you sell coaching, consulting, strategy, or another service based on your expertise, people need ways to understand the value of your work and feel they can trust you before they decide to work with you.

If you sell an intangible service, podcast guesting might be a visibility opportunity worth exploring.

A podcast conversation gives people time to experience:

→ how you think
→ what you believe
→ how you approach problems
→ the stories behind your expertise
→ what it might feel like to work with you

Getting in front of a new audience is the first step.
How you use that opportunity can help turn visibility into trust.

What do you want listeners to understand about you and your work?

Which personal stories could help them connect with you?

What do you want them to remember after the episode ends?

You don't need to memorize the perfect answers.
But you can prepare intentionally.

- Practice talking about your work.
- Explore which personal stories could support your message.
- Get feedback before the real interview.

Got a podcast interview coming up?

Or want to be ready when the
opportunity comes?

Come practice with me!

There are multiple creative ways to use your Story Connectors, which are the meaningful moments from your journey that are connected to and highlight the benefits of what you offer.

In this talk I gave at the Costa Women International Women’s Day Conference two years ago, I shared 5 examples of creative ways to use them.

One of them was using your relevant personal stories in your pitches to help you stand out to a podcast host or community host, so you get the visibility opportunity to talk about your business in front of new audiences.

If there’s an application form to fill out or an email you can send to explain why you might be a good fit, you can incorporate one of your Story Connectors as a way to:

- highlight a potential human connection with the host

- show that you have personal stories that could be relevant, interesting, and inspiring for their audience

- demonstrate how your strategic storytelling could contribute to a great conversation that combines your knowledge, practical examples and personal stories

Give the host a glimpse of the stories you could bring to the conversation and make your pitch stand out.
