THE HYDRO HOTEL - The regeneration story

1. The Founding of the Queen’s Hotel (1874)
The building that became the Hydro was originally built as the Queen’s Hotel during the great Victorian spa boom in Lisdoonvarna. It opened around 1874 and was designed to serve visitors coming to take the famous mineral waters.

2. Becoming Part of Ireland’s Spa Heritage
Lisdoonvarna grew into Ireland’s most famous spa town, with visitors travelling from across Ireland and Britain to experience the healing waters that had attracted people since the 1700s. The hotel became one of the key properties supporting the spa economy.

3. The Birth of the Hydro Hotel (1948)
After being owned by the Irish Tourist Board, the hotel was renamed the Hydro Hotel. It was known as one of the first hotels in Ireland to offer hot and cold running water in every bedroom—a major innovation at the time.

4. The White Family Era (1974)
Exactly 100 years after opening, the hotel was purchased by Jim White and the White family. Under their stewardship, the Hydro became synonymous with the town and played a huge role in promoting tourism in North Clare.

5. The Matchmaking Festival Connection
Over the last 50 years, the Hydro became one of the focal points of the world-famous Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival.

6. The Reawakening of the Hydro (2026 Onwards)
Following closure and several years out of tourism use, the hotel begins a new chapter under new ownership. The vision is not simply to reopen a hotel, but to reconnect the Hydro with its original purpose as a place of wellness, gathering, music, culture, and human connection in Ireland’s only Victorian spa town.

I was delighted to be asked to a part of phase one of the rebrand and regeneration of The Hydro Hotel in Lisdoonvarna.

In a few short months the transformation is stunning, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store next.

A fresh new rebrand for ABBEY COURT HOTEL in Ireland 💚

THE CHALLENGE
Abbey Court Hotel approached me at a pivotal moment of transformation. Their existing brand identity no longer reflected the quality of the experience they offered; it felt dated, inconsistent, and disconnected from the hotel’s evolving vision. As the interiors were being redesigned, the hotel needed a refined and cohesive brand identity system that would elevate the guest experience and align with its renewed direction.

OUR APPROACH
The rebrand drew inspiration from the elegance and sophistication of Art Deco interior design. Together, we developed a visual identity that mirrored the hotel’s luxurious atmosphere through a rich palette of deep greens, gold accents, and vibrant touches of orange.

At the heart of the identity is a stylised “A” monogram, designed to function as a versatile submark across the hotel experience. This element was seamlessly applied throughout the property and across both digital and print marketing materials, creating a strong and recognisable visual presence.

RESULT
The final outcome was a sophisticated and scalable brand identity system designed to bring consistency, flexibility, and a renewed sense of luxury to Abbey Court Hotel.

The deliverables included a comprehensive suite of logo variations, menus, bespoke signage, guest material, and a detailed brand guidelines package covering typography, colour systems, and usage rules. The refreshed identity now provides the hotel with a cohesive visual language that supports future growth, strengthens brand recognition, and enhances the overall guest experience.
