🧄 Happy National Garlic Day!
Today, 19th April, the world celebrates the most revered bulb in the French kitchen. Living in France, every day feels like National Garlic Day.
The French have been devoted to l’ail since the time of the Gauls and it is as fundamental to this country as bread, wine and cheese. You’ll find it in everything from French onion soup or tartiflette to a pot of escargot swimming in herb butter.
A few fun garlic facts
🌿 Garlic originated in Central Asia over 5,000 years ago, but France claimed it as its own
🧄 The gorgeous Rose de Lautrec, with its blush pink skin, has been grown in the same corner of southwest France since the Middle Ages
🏺 Louis Pasteur confirmed garlic’s antiseptic properties in 1858 and during WWI it was used to treat wounded soldiers when medical supplies ran short
🧛 It repels vampires. And mosquitoes, so a win, win!
🇫🇷 France produces over 21,000 tonnes a year. The country takes its garlic very seriously
Whether you’re roasting a whole head until it’s soft and golden, slipping a clove into a slow braise or simply rubbing a crust of bread before the best olive oil you can find, today is absolutely the day celebrate garlic!
