The team behind Muirneag have an incredible vision to restore an 80ft herring lugger and turn it into Scotland’s next sail training vessel. As someone who likes boats and always had a connection to the sea in some capacity throughout my life it's fantastic to see others keeping maritime heritage alive by giving young people life-changing experiences at sea.

When they first came to me the guys needed a website that could do justice to their story and lay the foundation for the start of a fundraising drive. Aberdeen Marketing Services finished designing and launching their new site (www.muirneag.org) late last year and has now progressed to supporting long term under our UK registered charities monthly package.

Outdated website content can mislead AI like OpenAI or Anthropic and your potential customers who use these engines to compare businesses.

Here’s how to stay ahead in 2026:

1) Add an llms.txt file to your root directory alongside your sitemap. Use Markdown with headings and bullet lists for clarity.

2) Update your content and prioritise anything that could put you at a disadvantage if a potential customer compares you against competitors via an LLM (see screenshot attached).

3) Keep it factual and simple and avoid marketing jargon or fluff. LLMs summarise more accurately with clear, descriptive content.

4) Structure your differentiation using tables, bullet lists and schema markup help LLMs distinguish your offerings.

5) Ensure major LLM crawlers can access your site (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.).

Optionally you could also block private scrapers and ai training models to protect your content. Just treat the main llm players like ChatGPT and Anthropic the same way we have treated traditional search engines like Google or Bing. Yay to the big guys, Nay (or is it Nae?) to everyone else by default.

A few context points:
Traditional search still dominates, but LLM use is growing rapidly.
Google and other engines are integrating AI summaries; in some markets, AI answers appear in 13%+ of searches.

We've all seen Google's AI summaries snippet at the top of search results. Many queries now end without clicks and users get answers directly on the page.

TL;DR:
Update your site now and remove outdated info.

Add new content to fill information gaps with AI comparison queries in mind: what do you want potential customers to read when they’re comparing you to competitors? If you're business is changing anything this year or has changed something in the past 12 months this applies.

I’ve been deep in research while working on a client project, comparing the best free email marketing platforms out there. And let me tell you cutting through all the hype and noise isn’t easy!

The truth is, getting started with email marketing doesn’t have to cost anything. Many businesses don’t need a paid tier straight away. In fact, free plans can get you up and running quickly, letting you reach your audience without any upfront cost.

When looking at free tiers, the two key things to pay attention to are:

1) Monthly sends – how many emails you can send per month?
2) Total contacts – how many subscribers you can store?

- How often your ads are allowed to show
-How early in the day/week Google may throttle your ads
-Whether you hit “Limited by budget”

If your budget is too low:
-Ads may stop showing midday

If your budget is high:
-Google can show ads whenever there is demand
-You capture more volume if your bids are high enough

Marketing is all about making decisions. In paid advertising, there’s a trade-off between buying intent and cost per acquisition. Channels with the highest intent often cost more, while channels with lower intent can reach more people at a lower cost, but may take more nurturing to convert.

Choose channels based on your business goal and audience intent.

Search Ads (Google, Bing, Shopping, Apple Search) are high-intent and work for almost any business, but can come with higher costs per conversion.

Social Ads (Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube) reach broader audiences and are best for awareness or medium-intent buyers usually at a lower cost however conversions may be less immediate.

Marketplace and App Ads (Amazon, Etsy, Apple Search) are ideal for driving product sales or app installs, offering high intent and strong ROI!

Quora and Native Ads target niche, high-intent audiences, making them great for B2B, knowledge-based businesses, or lead generation (but volume may be smaller).

If starting on a small budget or unsure where to start experimentation, aim for the green zone.

That’s why Aberdeen Marketing Services has refreshed how we deliver local marketing support. Ensure you have a clear call-to-action + form on your homepage to capture opt-in subscribers who are happy to be kept in the loop about your business or registered charity.

Setup an automation bridge to sync those form submissions automatically to your email marketing platform (Brevo works well if you're starting out because it's free and gives you a generous contacts allowance on that free tier).

Now while you sleep as your social media content drives visitors to your website, any subscribers captured automatically get added to your monthly newsletter list.
