Can I create a brand in Canva?

Yes.

And no.

The problem isn't Canva.

Canva is just a tool.

I've seen amazing brands created in Canva and I've seen terrible brands created in expensive design software.

The tool isn't what makes the difference.

The thinking behind it does.

Before you start picking colours, fonts and logos, you need to understand what you're actually building.

Who are you speaking to?
What do you want to be known for?
Where are you heading?
What makes you different?

That's the work most people skip.

They jump straight into Canva, drag a few elements onto a page and call it a visual identity.

But a brand is so much more than that.

Canva can absolutely help you bring a brand to life.

What it can't do is tell you what your brand should be.

That's the bit that comes first.

Once you've got clarity, the design becomes much easier.

And for the record, I'm a designer and I use Canva all the time, side by side with the Adobe Creative Cloud 😊

P.S. One thing to be aware of: if you're creating a logo using Canva elements, you won't be able to trademark it because those elements aren't exclusively yours. If trademarking is important to you, you'll need an original logo created from scratch.

I've been talking a lot about how I've done a full circle... going back to my roots and how I started my business.

Yes, that was as a graphic designer...

But I do a lot more than that.

Design is still a huge part of what I do.

But it's not where the work starts.

I help brilliant women bring the next level of their business to life.

Sometimes that means helping them uncover the thread running through everything they do.

Taking all those ideas, thoughts and possibilities swirling around in their head and turning them into something clear.

This project started with a simple question:

"Can you take a look at my website?"

So I did.

I went through the site, made notes and pulled together a review of everything I felt could be improved.

Then I headed up to Little Oakhurst Boutique Glamping , where Jo, the lovely owner, gave me a tour and we sat down to go through it all.

What started as a website review quickly became something bigger.

Because the site wasn't reflecting just how special Little Oakhurst really is.

Nestled in the beautiful Pendle Hills, it's one of those places that makes you instantly want to pack a bag and book a stay.

So together we refreshed the website to better showcase the experience, the accommodation and everything that makes it unique.

First came the Figma design.

Then the refinements.

Next, the build.

Finally, the launch.

It's been lovely seeing the transformation and helping bring the next chapter of the business to life.

This is why I love what I do.

Sometimes it starts with a website.

Sometimes it starts with a logo.

But often it starts with a conversation and a fresh pair of eyes.

Today I let a marketing dice decide what content I was posting.

It landed on ENGAGE. 😂

The funny thing is, a lot of businesses are running their marketing exactly like this.

Trying random things.

Crossing their fingers.

Hoping something works.

The best brands aren't built on luck.

They're built on clarity.

And clarity starts by finding your thread.

How many jobs have you had in your life?

I'm 41 (I know, I don't look a day over 21 😜) and I've only had five jobs.

Four of them were before I turned 20.

Newspaper girl. (I quit after the Christmas tips. Who wants to deliver papers in the snow wearing a school skirt?)

Silver server at weddings. (The Baileys cheesecake was worth it.)

Evenings in a chippy. (The free leftovers at the end of a shift were the real perk.)

Debenhams. (I worked my way through several departments.)

Then I started at a publishing company.

And that was it.

I spent 18 years there, working my way up from being on the phones to leading the design and marketing room.

I've spent more than 20 years working in design and marketing.

Because I genuinely love what I do.

But also because I grew up believing you stayed in a job no matter what.

Thanks Dad 😂

Even when things got hard.

Even when I knew I was capable of more.

Looking back, though, those years weren't wasted.

They taught me so much.

Grit
Determination
Leadership
And obviously the bits I was paid for, design, marketing & systems

And eventually, I found the confidence to do things my own way.

Now I get to help people bring what's in their head to life through branding and design, whilst also teaching others the skills I've spent years developing.

It's funny.

Twenty years sounds like a long time.

But it really doesn't feel like it.

And I definitely don't feel 41.

This is what happens when you stop guessing and start digging deeper.

Watching this project come together reminded me how often people think they're buying a logo, a website or a colour palette.

What they're actually looking for is clarity.

A way to take what's in their head and turn it into something other people can see, understand and connect with.

That's what happened here.

The vision was already there.

The work was already there.

The expertise was already there.

We just had to find the thread running through it all and build from there. 🧵

The advice I'd give someone who wants to step up isn't about doing more.

It starts with going back.

I was interviewed for a summit recently and the final question was:

"What advice would you give to women who are looking to step up to that next level?"

My answer probably wasn't what people expected.

Go back.

Because when it comes to your brand, you need to look back before you move forwards.

Look at what you've already created.

Your website.
Your socials.
Your printed materials.
Your offers.
Your content.

Spread it all out in front of you and really look at it.

Does it match the person you're becoming?
Does it match where you're going next?
Does it reflect the level you want to be operating at?

Because if it doesn't, you need to decide what stays and what goes.

Chop it
Change it
Refine it
Drop it

Whatever needs to happen.

Because every piece of your brand should be helping you move forwards, not keeping you tied to an older version of yourself.

The mistake I see people make is trying to build the next chapter without looking at what they've already got.

They just keep adding more.

You just need to take a proper look at it.
