New brief. New campaign. New idea? Not necessarily.

Sometimes the best creative opportunity is already sitting in front of us. A fresh perspective, a new application or a little more development can give existing work another lease of life.

Good ideas deserve to work harder.

It's tempting to think every new marketing challenge needs a completely new idea.

But sometimes an existing campaign could be refreshed, a good idea developed further or a piece of creative work used in a different way.

A lot of time and money goes into creating these things, so why not make the most of what's already there?

Sometimes the cleverest approach is to make a good idea work harder.

Exquisite Build in North Devon initially approached RK Creative for a new website. But looking at the business as a whole revealed a bigger opportunity.

The ambition was to attract larger projects with the potential to move into more commercial work. The brand needed to reflect the quality already being delivered.

So we looked beyond the website at the positioning, messaging, identity and social presence too.

The aim was to bring the brand up to the standard its name promises.

A few glimpses here of the thinking behind the project.

When a brand starts to feel tired, starting again can seem like the obvious answer.

But perhaps the identity isn’t actually the problem.

The messaging may have become unclear. The website and social media might feel disconnected. The business may simply have evolved while the brand hasn’t quite kept up.

Sometimes a refresh is enough. A few carefully considered changes can make a big difference without throwing away everything you’ve already built.

A rebrand can absolutely be the right answer. But first, it’s worth asking:

What isn’t working?

Sometimes it’s evolution rather than revolution.

We're being asked to save water. But it got me thinking about AI.

The new Let's Save Water campaign uses children to encourage us to think about the water we use every day - shorter showers, fixing leaks and being more conscious of what we consume.

But seeing children deliver the message made me think about their future too.

This is a generation growing up with AI. As the technology develops, it's likely to become an increasingly normal part of their lives - at school, at work and at home.

AI can be an incredibly useful tool, but the data centres supporting it also use resources, including water for cooling.

So perhaps learning to use water responsibly in the future also means understanding some of the less obvious ways we consume it.

How often do we stop to think about the resources being used when we type a prompt into AI?

I certainly didn't until recently.

Last week it was packaging. This week, websites.

I still come across websites where, within those first few moments, I can’t work out what the business actually does.

Those first few moments matter. If people can’t quickly understand what you do, there’s every chance they’ll simply move on - and that could mean a lost opportunity.

It might look great. The photography might be beautiful. The language might sound impressive.
But what is it you actually do?

You don’t need to say everything straight away. You do need to make it clear enough to give people a reason to keep looking.

Good design gets attention. Clear communication gives people a reason to stay.

Sometimes, saying it clearly really is the best design.

Last week I talked about packaging and the importance of saying clearly what something is.

The same applies to websites.

I look at a lot of websites. I’m still surprised by how often I land on a homepage, only to find that within those first few moments I can’t work out what the business actually does.

Those first few moments matter. If people can’t quickly understand what you do, there’s every chance they’ll simply move on - and that could mean a lost opportunity.

It might look great. The photography might be beautiful. The language might sound impressive.

A website doesn’t need to tell me everything straight away. It does need to make clear what you do, who it’s for and give someone a reason to keep looking.

The packaging that says it all.

You know when you spot an empty supermarket aisle and cut through it to get to the checkout quicker?

That’s exactly how I came across V***a Balm.

It certainly wasn’t on my shopping list, but it stopped me in my tracks. Bold, simple and absolutely no doubt about what it is.

Shower gel, on the other hand, was on my shopping list.

But with the Sanex packaging, the words Micellar Shower Gel are tucked away near the bottom amongst lots of other information.

Two very different approaches, but a useful reminder that packaging has a communication job to do too.

Sometimes, saying it clearly really is the best design.

Sometimes the title says it all.

I first read Do the F*cking Work during lockdown, and recently picked it up again.

It’s a refreshingly straightforward reminder that ideas are the easy bit. Whether you’re building a business, developing a brand or trying to make something happen, eventually you have to stop thinking about it and actually do the work.

That certainly resonates with me at the moment.

There’s always another idea to explore, another conversation to have and another opportunity to create - but none of it gets very far without putting the work in.

Sometimes you just need the reminder.

Do the f*cking work.
