🚨 Thinking about a “free” website? Read this first…
We all love a bargain, but when it comes to your business, a “free” website can sometimes become the most expensive decision you make.
Here are a few things worth considering before you click “Publish”:
💻 Free rarely means free.
Many platforms charge later for connecting your own domain, removing adverts, adding an online shop, improving SEO, accepting payments, or unlocking features your business eventually needs.
🤖 AI is a fantastic tool… but it isn’t a strategy.
AI can build a website in minutes, but it doesn’t know your business, your customers, or what makes you different from your competitors. A website should tell your story, not generate generic marketing phrases.
🎯 Who is your ideal customer?
A good website is designed around the people you want to attract. It considers their needs, their journey, and what will encourage them to get in touch or buy. A template can’t do that on its own.
🎨 Templates can make businesses look the same.
Many free website builders use the same layouts, colours and structures thousands of other businesses are using. If your website looks like everyone else’s, why should customers remember yours?
🔒 What about security and hosting?
Do you know who hosts your website? How secure it is? Whether it’s backed up? What happens if it goes offline? These aren’t the exciting parts of a website, but they’re some of the most important.
📈 Can it grow with your business?
Today’s simple brochure website might become tomorrow’s online shop, booking system or membership site. Starting with the right foundations can save you time, money and frustration later.
🧐 Do your homework.
Before choosing anyone to build your website—or deciding to do it yourself—ask questions. Who owns the website? Can you move it elsewhere? What ongoing costs are there? Is SEO included? Will it be mobile-friendly? Will someone support you if something goes wrong?
A website isn’t just an online brochure. It’s often your business’s first impression, hardest-working salesperson, and one of your most valuable marketing tools.
Choose wisely. Invest where it matters. Your future customers will thank you.
