I think branding needs to get simpler again.

I was talking to a friend about this the other day and I’ve realised I’m stripping things back more and more in the work I’m creating.

There is SO much visual noise everywhere at the moment.

And AI has added to it. So many AI-generated images are incredibly busy, full of stuff and they just feel like AI.

They don’t feel like the person behind the business. They don’t really say anything about them at all.

And it’s making me want to go completely the other way.

I’m talking, clean layouts, strong typography, breathing space, striking photography and a considered amount of recognisable brand elements used really well.

Simple design doesn’t mean boring design!

And it definitely doesn’t mean you haven’t put enough effort into it.

Sometimes good design is knowing what not to add.

I think we’re all a bit overwhelmed by how much we’re seeing and consuming every day, and I’m finding myself thinking more and more about how I can make something clear, beautiful and easy to take in.

Rather than adding another thing to an already very noisy world.

Anyone else craving a bit more simplicity?

Something that I see a LOT is centre aligned text, and I get it. It looks pretty and can look like it's filling the page better than left aligned text. But when it comes to people actually reading the text and accessing your design centre alignment is not always the best choice.

The majority of your text, and especially body text, should be left aligned. Centre aligned works for titles and headlines. Right aligned should be used very sparingly!

Take a scroll through this post to find out a bit more about why this is and see some examples.

The question of text alignment came up recently in my Brand Confidence Club. This is one of the things I'm enjoying most about the club - the conversations and questions that come up.

From these I am developing resources to support my members with their designs - including one about text alignment.

If you want to know more about the resources and conversations we're having in the Brand Confidence Club pop me a DM.

In the meantime let me know in the comments how do you tend to align your text - left, centre or right??

I am SO excited about what we’re doing inside the Brand Confidence Club this month 🙌

Our September Masterclass + Ideas Session is all about building a marketing campaign – what you need to think about, what you need to create and how to make the design work across it all.

AND the next day, I’m trialling a co-working session so members can actually start putting it into practice, with me there to help along the way.

It’s a little experiment, but also part of how I want the Club to evolve – bringing even more marketing support alongside the branding and design.

So if you’ve been thinking about joining, this is a VERY good month to get yourself in there 👀

As a brand designer, it feels really obvious to me that every business needs a clear brand identity. But I have to keep reminding myself… not everyone knows what I know!

And actually, I think there’s still quite a lot of confusion around what a brand is versus a brand identity.

So if you’ve ever thought “I’ve got a logo, surely that’s enough?” or wondered whether you really need a brand identity at all, have a swipe through.

I’ve broken down what it actually means, where your brand shows up and why having some control over how people experience your business really matters.

I’d love to know where you’re at with yours. Do you feel like you have a clear brand identity already, or are you still not convinced you need one? Let’s chat in the comments 👇

This was such a lovely brand to work on because there’s so much meaning behind it.

Donna created Calm & Collective following her own experience of cancer and the feelings of loss and loneliness that can come with a diagnosis.

This wasn’t about starting again with the brand. There were already elements that meant a lot to Donna, including the turtle and the meaning behind the ampersand, so we kept those at the heart of the identity while giving everything around them a refresh.

The aim was to create something that felt calm, caring and personal, but still strong – and that gave Donna a brand she could feel confident taking forward as Calm & Collective grows.

Take a look through the carousel to see how it all came together. I’d love to know what you think!

I’m really pleased with where we landed and very excited to see what Donna does next with 🐢

Your website isn't just about looking good. It should help your audience understand your business, trust what they see, and feel ready to take the next step with you.

If you get these three things right then you're well on the way to achieving this:

✅ Clear Headings
Make sure they're easy to read and differentiate them from the body text. Mark page headings as H1 for SEO.

✅ Professional photography
A brand shoot is such a good investment for your business; and goes a lot further than just making your website look professional. If you're local to me then I can never recommend Aldcroft Photography highly enough! She's collaborated with me on multiple website and branding clients.

✅ Consistent design
Consistency wins. Every time.

So is your website ticking these 3 things? If not let me know in the comments which one you need to work on.

I've loved working with and the next step was to design her some social media templates. This is how you can really bring your brand to life and ensure consistency.

Consistency in how you show up across all touchpoints in your business is key to people recognising and remembering you & your brand. This is why I recommend to anyone to get branded social media templates. It gives you a base to work from to design your content whilst ensuring you're consistent and familiar for your audience. The added plus is it reduces a lot of time playing around on Canva!

For Katie I designed her a set of single slide graphics, a professional carousel and a set of IG Story templates. Stories can often be forgotten and branding lost but they're just as important as your grid posts so they need to be sending the same message.

I deliver these templates direct through Canva so my client can copy, duplicate and amend over & over again; meaning a one off investment that keeps on giving value. I'm pleased to say Katie is really happy with her templates. I know they're going to save her so much time and enhance her online presence.

If you need some branded templates for your business then do get in touch. I don't need to have designed your original branding either; I'm happy to work with and evolve your current brand.

I see this a LOT. Amazingly talented female founders who have invested in their branding but don't actually know how to use it.

They're still wasting hours trying to perfect one social media post, and they're too embarassed half the time to even share a link to their website.

If this sounds like you then I'm glad you're here because this is exactly why I created the Brand Confidence Club.

To support female founders like you gain confidence in their brand. To give their designs clarity and consistency so that their business looks as good as the work they deliver.

If you want to know more about the Brand Confidence Club then head to my website (link in my bio), or pop me a message for a chat anytime.
