Who wouldn’t support the ‘polluter pays’ principal? Basic common sense no?!

In the book ‘Small is Beautiful’ by Schumacher; Uneconomic is described as failing to earn an adequate profit in terms of money

If the ‘polluter pays’ principal; where environmental costs were incurred to the business; was active then we’d have a very different capitalism and market

You can help our environmentally sustainable business become economically sustainable by buying our weekly veg boxes. (Thank you to our veg box subscribers🙏🏼❤️)

Support similar ventures in your local area rather than buying cheap, chemically sprayed products that harm you and the environment.

We need a bridge between individual responsibly and governmental imposition of business accountability (small steps is a good place to start)

Our small daily decisions matter…(baby steps feels more accessible)

Conventional farming is a self-perpetuating cycle of destruction and expensive chemical dependence. Without soil organisms and good soil structure; water and nutrients leach away, and the soil compacts and becomes prone to erosion
-In 2014 farmers weekly announced we only have a hundred harvests left in our country

Sir George Stapledon, who was an English grassland scientist and pioneer environmentalist, (1882-1960) in his view a rotational system not only maintained soil fertility, but it also kept farmers self-sufficient by avoiding the need for chemical fertilizers and imported animal feeds; mixed farming gave farmers agricultural resilience and stability.

Support healthy soils through the ‘power of the purse’ be that in buying our chemical free produce or supporting a local, chemical free or organic producer near you🙏🏼✨

A report confirms that pesticides, fungicides and herbicides damage soil biomes and reduce fertility.

Read; Widespread pesticide use harms soils life, Pesticide Action Network, 23 February 2026

‘Soil covers this month’s front page of the science journal Nature, headlining with: “Down to Earth - How pesticides reshape soil biodiversity”. The cover refers to the recently published extensive research of an international team of researchers: “Pesticide residues alter taxonomic and functional biodiversity in soils”.

Soils host about 59% of Earth’s biodiversity. Soil life is essential for soil and wider ecosystem functions, and for our subsistence. Soil organisms provide critical functions such as plant growth, food production, water purification, buffering and storage, and carbon storage. The harmful impacts of pesticides on soil biodiversity, threatening ecosystem health, have been demonstrated in scientific literature. We dug into the topic in our recent earlier blog, celebrating World Soil Day.

*We're Hiring!*

Forbidden Fruit and Veg market garden is looking for a Head Grower to run our 1.7 acre Market Garden which includes outdoor beds, an orchard, six polytunnels, and a small greenhouse in a walled garden with a packing shed nearby, and about 35 chickens. We sell wholesale to a local pub, shops in Bristol, 2 farmers' markets, an honesty-box kiosk, and via delivered and collected veg boxes.

We are looking for an individual who can commit for one year, renewable if both parties agree, to manage the market garden and provide leadership and support to the trainee and volunteers.

We are able to consider a job share for this role.

The candidate(s) must have at least two years’ experience of organic/agroecological growing, preferably in a commercial setting, with a strong theoretical and practical experience in edible horticulture. A full, current driving licence is required. The freelance salary would be £90 per 7-hour day. Days worked will be 5 days per week. Accommodation will be free. You will be able to choose between a room in my house with the community of Wwoofers and a trainee, or I can offer a detached 5-bedroom house with your contribution to utilities and food to be discussed.
