EcoFest turns 5!

The very first EcoFest event, held at the Denby Dale Pie Hall in 2022, was intended to showcase local environmental groups and eco - businesses, whilst also providing informative talks and learning opportunities for anyone interested in protecting our beautiful natural environment. Organised by Denby Dale Parish Council’s Climate Emergency Working Group (CEWG), EcoFest has continued to grow, each year moving around the villages, to be accessible to as many people as possible across Denby Dale ward.Denby Dale Parish Council prides itself on the support it gives to local schools, from offering grants towards extra-curricular activities to helping them - through the Parish Council Countryside Project - aim for the prestigious Eco Schools Green Flag Award. Skelmanthorpe Methodist Church had provided a great venue in 2023 but, when the CEWG was looking for somewhere to hold future EcoFest events, it made perfect sense to put village schools front and centre. Emley First School hosted in 2024, then Scissett CE Academy the following year. In 2026, for its 5th event, EcoFest is heading to Birdsedge. Birdsedge First School is a small, rural school, set in a beautiful location, surrounded by the rolling hills and woodland scenery of the Upper Dearne Valley. Donna Barker, Headteacher, describes Birdsedge as “small but mighty” and is proud of their family ethos, celebrating the fact that children of all ages play, learn and grow together. The school’s commitment to the natural environment is clear. Donna didn’t hesitate when she was asked whether the school would be able to support EcoFest this year because, in her words, “We have a love for all things outdoors and strongly believe that our best classrooms are roofed only by the sky!” EcoFest 2026 is on 24th October, with talks confirmed and a range of stall holders ready to share their knowledge and their lovely products. There will be information on a variety of topics, from bee keeping to community allotments, and the opportunity to speak to voluntary groups as well as do a bit of early Christmas shopping! More details, including the schedule of talks, will be shared on Denby Dale Parish Council’s page. EcoFest is on Saturday 24 October, 10am - 3pm, at Birdsedge First School, Pen*stone Road, Birdsedge, Huddersfield HD8 8XR.Free entry. Free refreshments.All welcome!

tito’s Spotlight on Local Charities.Potteric Carr NatureReserve and cafe.A wonderfully wet and wild history.

This year, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is celebrating 80 years of wildlife conservation and restoration across Yorkshire. Founded in 1946 to look after Askham Bog nature reserve in York, the Trust has flourished over the last 80 years: from a tiny office in the Yorkshire Museum to nearly 200 staff today, and from Askham Bog to over 110 nature reserves. Supported by over a thousand volunteers and 45,000 members, the Trust’s work spans from the flowering meadows of the East Riding and Flamborough’s cliffs to peatland restoration and the rolling stone-walled Dales.Nowhere has the power of working together been more present than Potteric Carr nature reserve, nestled onto the edge of Doncaster. Once part of a vast fenland that once stretched all the way across the Humber basin to the coast, Potteric Carr has held a lot of roles in its long life; in the 1500s it was a small part of the Hatfield Royal Deer Chase, although fairly unpopular due to being continuously flooded (!) and there were then various attempts to drain it for farming which succeeded in the 1760s. In the 1950s, coal seams from Rossington Colliery caused subsidence – and the fen conditions slowly began to return.As one of our more urban reserves, Potteric Carr and its unique habitat has often been under threat. First declared a nature reserve by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust in 1968, it wasn’t long before the fenland came under threat in 1971 from the proposed routing of the M18. Minutes from the House of Commons at the time read, ‘Few people familiar with Doncaster and its problems of traffic congestion would question the urgent need of an east-west bypass. However, there was no welcome from my constituents – instead they reacted with shock and dismay when they saw the proposed route.’ The community rallied together, 7,500 local residents objected, and after a campaign by local campaigners like Roger Mitchell, the Trust and other organisations the route was changed and the reserve was saved.Considering Potteric Carr is now wedged between the M18, which passes to its south, the main East Coast mainline and the iPort, it is practically bursting at the seams with wildlife. Over 230 species of birds have been recorded, including some of Yorkshire’s very rare breeding bitterns and majestic marsh harriers, as well as newts, roe deer, dragonflies, butterflies and moths, and some absolutely stunning marshland flowers. Visitors can roam its miles of accessible tracks through reedbed, woodland and meadow before returning to the Discovery Centre for a hot drink, chip butty and a browse of the wildlife-themed gift shop; not to mention a year-round programme of events including a Fungi Festival and Robin Festival!Come visit us at Potteric Carr Visitor Centre, Mallard Way, Doncaster DN4 8DBTel 01302 325736 or visit www.ywt.org.uk/potteric-carr for more information.There is a tramper, an off-road mobility scooter available for hire. Farewell to“a class act”by Jon Howe.

The death of John Shires in July had a profound effect on the many colleagues he worked with in local newspapers, radio and TV in a long and storied career, but also on the millions of viewers who came to know him as a reliable source of news and entertainment at teatime every day for over 30 years. Coming just four years after the death of Harry Gration, the Yorkshire region has lost two heavyweight legends of local TV, the pillars who navigated us through our daily diet of news and sport in the 1990s and onwards. John Shires died in St James’s Hospital in Leeds on July 1st after a long illness, he was 71 years old and was surrounded by his family. He retired from presenting Yorkshire Television’s flagship ‘Calendar’ programme in 2021 after 32 years of being a reporter and then presenter, forming a long on-screen partnership with Gaynor Barnes. Indeed, the pair retired on the same day, presenting their final show together on March 26th 2021 and declaring that one could not carry on without the other. Upon his death, Gaynor Barnes paid tribute to John, saying: “He was a class act. A gentleman. He was so clever, and my goodness, he was funny. I so appreciate that we worked together for 30 years - it’s a long, long time, but he made it fun. He really did.” Another former colleague, Christine Talbot added: “It’s hard to describe the hole in our lives that John Shires leaves among everyone who knew and loved him...Shiresey was a true gent with the kindest heart hidden beneath his pretend grumpiness and he cared deeply about everyone he worked with.” John Shires started his journalistic career at the Pontefract & Castleford Express, graduating through Radio Aire, before finding a job next door in the YTV studios on Kirkstall Road in Leeds, joining Calendar in 1989. He had the tough task of reporting on the Hillsborough Disaster within months of joining, and viewers also recall his skill and diplomacy when reporting directly from Istanbul in Turkey when two Leeds United supporters were murdered before the club’s UEFA Cup Semi-Final in 2000.In his final programme in 2021, John revealed on air that he was a Huddersfield Town fan and he was regularly seen at games before and after his retirement. John had a genuine love of all sports, playing and watching, and particularly Yorkshire cricket, of which he was extremely knowledgeable. His professionalism shone through in all his work and stands as a benchmark against which all future presenters will be judged.

FILM REVIEW by Liam Hathaway

New Releases this September.

The Dog Stars(dir. Ridley Scott)Earlier this year, I treated myself to a Ridley Scott marathon to tick off the few remaining films of his that had evaded me over the years. I also used this as an excuse to revisit some of his more recent classics (AMERICAN GANGSTER, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, THE COUNSELOR) purely because no one has continued to make such well-wrought and aesthetically dazzling entertainment into their later career quite like Ridley has. Even at 88-years-old, he’s admirably refusing to slow down and continuing to direct $100 million material like THE DOG STARS, a post-apocalyptic actioner starring Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin, in which survivors of a world ravaged by a pandemic hang on for a better existence. In cinemas August 28th (so basically September).

Don’t Look Back in Anger (dir. Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern)Love them or loathe them, Oasis are an era-defining band. In the UK during the 1990s, their music, their style and the often-obnoxious headline-grabbing antics of the Gallaghers shook pop culture in a way that perhaps hadn’t been felt since punk ripped the rulebook up two decades prior. Following their fifteen-year hiatus, it seems the world has gone mad for the Manchester Britpoppers all over again. They’re selling out shows ten times over, and “Wonderwall” essentially became England’s unofficial anthem during the recent World Cup. DON’T LOOK BACK IN ANGER sort of serves as a follow-up to the earlier Oasis doc (2016’s SUPERSONIC) by charting the historic reunion of Liam and Noel and the band’s massively successful 2025 world tour. In cinemas September 11th.

Cult ClassicTrainspotting(dir. Danny Boyle) – 30th AnniversarySpeaking of the 1990s, it sometimes blows my mind that they were (mostly) thirty years ago – which means that Danny Boyle’s era-defining Irvine Welsh adaptation TRAINSPOTTING from 1996 is that old too! Surfing the wave ushered in by ‘Cool Britannia,’ with its eclectic soundtrack and star-making turn by Ewan McGregor, Boyle’s film was an instant phenomenon back in its day and my recent revisit confirmed its timeless style. Telling a tale of despondent drug addicts stumbling through bad ideas and sobriety attempts, it could have been a didactic bore. But instead, it blends a visceral mixture of euphoria, hilarity, horror, surrealism and sharp insights into ‘90s waster culture that it’s impossible not to come out the other end in some exhilarated daze.

In Case You Missed ItThe Odyssey(dir. Christopher Nolan)Shot entirely on IMAX’s 70mm cameras (an industry first) and featuring enough star power to have a gravitational pull (Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and Samantha Morton to name a few), it’s hard to imagine any film being more colossal than Nolan’s action fantasy epic based on Homer’s foundational Greek tale. Seeing THE ODYSSEY in a packed cinema and on the biggest screen was nothing short of awe-inspiring, both in terms of sheer spectacle and its visual magnitude. Though filled with the expected immense battles and terrifying Cyclops and witches (I did not expect this to be Nolan’s scariest film), what struck me most is how Nolan has spun the story into a stirring tale about PTSD, the cycle of war and its toll on civilisation. This is the benchmark for massive blockbuster cinema.
