US President Donald Trump may have cited national security as the reason for their bid to annex Greenland but one of the men appointed to promote closer ties between American and the Danish territory has given a completely different and bizarre reason - seafood.

Thomas Dans, the chairman of the US Arctic Research Commission, told the New Yorker that the US could take all the seafood Greenland produces once it is annexed. He said that the move would cut out the middlemen and also block China access to it.

He also suggested that such a large haul would mean that Red Lobster, a famous restaurant chain, could bring back its all-you-can-eat shrimp offer. The restaurant had discontinued the offer after it led to massive losses. This leads to the question - how much seafood does Greenland produce for Thomas Dans to be so interest in it.

According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity, seafood in Greenland's main export. In 2024, Greenland exported $572 million in non-fillet frozen fish, $508 million in crustaceans, $237 million in processed crustaceans and $136 million in fish fillets.
