WHAT THE F*** IS A PURPLE COW?

It's the thing in the video that has no business being there.

Seth Godin coined it back in 2003. He was driving through France past field after field of cows...

lovely for about twenty minutes, then completely boring. A purple cow, you'd stop the car for.
His point was that being good isn't remarkable. Being remarkable is remarkable.

Two decades on it's the most useful idea in social media, because the feed is those French fields. Every business video looks like every other business video. A tidy shot of your product is a brown cow.

So put something in frame that shouldn't be there.

A bloke in a full suit of armour pulling pints. Someone eating a full roast dinner in an escape room. A wheelbarrow of firewood in the middle of a nightclub. It doesn't have to make sense — it has to make someone go "hang on, what?"

That half-second of confusion is the whole game. Watch time decides whether Meta shows your video to anyone new, and you cannot get watch time from somebody who already scrolled past.

One rule though. The purple cow has to lead somewhere. If the weird thing has nothing to do with what you sell, you've bought attention you can't spend. The armour only works if the pub's doing a "medieval" night.

Most local businesses aren't boring. They just film themselves like they are.
