One of the hardest lessons I've learned over the last six years is that saying "no" is sometimes the right thing to do.

When I first started THMC, I found it really difficult. I'd squeeze in "quick jobs", answer emails late into the evening and do the odd favour because I wanted to help. The problem was, every hour I spent working for free was an hour I wasn't spending on my own business or my paying clients.

These days I'm much better at protecting my time. That doesn't mean I don't care, quite the opposite. It means I can give my clients the attention they deserve without constantly feeling like I'm chasing my tail.

If you're running your own business, remember that your time has value too. Don't be afraid to protect it.

There's a lot of advice on social media telling business owners they need to be on camera every day, pointing at text, following trends and dancing around the office.

Personally, I think that's nonsense.

Should people see the face behind the business? Absolutely. People buy from people.

Do you need to make your social media look like an audition for Britain's Got Talent? Definitely not.

I probably appear on THMC's social media once a month, and that's enough. I'd much rather create useful content consistently than force myself into videos that don't feel authentic.

Find a style that suits you. Your audience will appreciate honesty far more than the latest trend.

Have you ever avoided creating content because it didn't feel like "you"?

One of the nicest parts of my job is seeing clients grow over the years.

I've worked with AccuGrit for around five years now, and it's been a genuine pleasure watching the business go from strength to strength. I truly believe the real reason they've been so successful is the people behind it.

They're ambitious, they care about their customers, and they're genuinely one of the nicest teams you'll ever meet. It makes my job incredibly easy when I'm working with businesses that are passionate about what they do.

Long-term relationships like this are what running THMC is all about, and I hope there are many more years to come.

I'm always grateful to work with such fantastic clients. Thank you for trusting us to be part of your journey.

One of the biggest myths about running your own business is that you somehow end up with loads of free time.

I'd genuinely love to know where mine is!

Like most business owners, my weeks are a mixture of client meetings, emails, planning, admin, accounts, networking and trying to remember what I walked into a room for. Running a business isn't just doing the job you're good at; it's wearing about twenty different hats every day.

Would I swap it? Not a chance.

There's something incredibly rewarding about building something that's yours, even if it does occasionally mean answering emails with a coffee in one hand and a to-do list in the other.

I was asked recently to describe myself in three words.

Funny. Loyal. Clumsy.

The last one has probably got me into more trouble than I'd care to admit, and is largely responsible for me recently undergoing a third knee operation. What started as a daft accident has had a much bigger impact than I ever imagined.

It's also taught me something quite valuable. You never really know what someone is dealing with behind the scenes. Most people I meet through work probably wouldn't know I'm classed as disabled, and that's absolutely fine. It doesn't define me, but it has shaped me.

I still love what I do, still enjoy working with brilliant businesses and still believe a good sense of humour gets you through most things.

This is probably one of the questions I'm asked most.

"Should we be on TikTok?"

The answer is... it depends.

If you've got the time, resources, and your audience is there, then absolutely. But for most SMEs, I'd rather see them doing two or three platforms really well than trying to be everywhere at once.

There's a lot of pressure to keep up with the latest trends, but marketing isn't about chasing every new platform. It's about showing up consistently where your customers already are.

Don't spread yourself too thin. Good marketing is about making smart decisions, not ticking every box.
Not sure where to focus your marketing? We'd be happy to help you build a plan that works for your business.

I completely understand why people build their own websites. When budgets are tight, it feels like an obvious place to save money.

The problem is, if your business relies on being found online, your website is often your first impression. A site that doesn't clearly explain what you do, isn't easy to navigate or doesn't encourage people to get in touch could be costing you far more than you realise.

Sometimes spending a little more at the start actually saves money in the long run.

If you're not sure whether your website is helping or hindering your business, we'd be happy to take a look.

There aren't many things that wind me up in business, but one of them is people selling themselves as marketing experts when they have very little experience behind them.

Businesses invest hard-earned money into marketing because they expect a return. That's a big responsibility, and I think it's important to be honest about your experience and what you can genuinely help with.

Nobody knows everything, and that's absolutely fine. I'd rather say "that's not my area" than pretend otherwise.

Building trust takes years. Losing it takes minutes.

One thing I've learned over the last six years is that marketing doesn't have to be a huge campaign to make a difference.

I think people often overcomplicate it. They spend months waiting for the perfect idea, when in reality it's consistency that gets results. Showing up regularly, sharing your expertise and reminding people you're there will nearly always outperform the occasional "big push".

It's not glamorous, but it works. In fact, it's exactly how we've grown THMC over the last year.

If your marketing has become a bit stop-start, perhaps it's time to get back into a routine.

One of the biggest changes I've made this year was deciding to invest in my own business.

Like a lot of business owners, I was brilliant at putting clients first and my own marketing second. It's easy to do when you're busy, but eventually I realised I couldn't keep telling other businesses to invest in themselves if I wasn't prepared to do the same.

Since then we've improved our website, invested in SEO, tightened up our systems and started shouting a bit louder about what we actually do. The results have been worth every penny.

Sometimes the best investment isn't a bigger office or another piece of software. Sometimes it's simply making sure people know you exist.

What's been the best investment you've made in your business this year?
