My advice - don’t put hashtags in your Instagram bio unless they are your own branded ones.

Otherwise you’re just inviting people to tap away from your content.

Welcome to day one of my advent calendar!

Today's tip - tap insights on your Instagram business profile and at the top you will now be able to choose from 7 day or 30 day insights.

In order to get a true reflection, always try to check and record your insights on the same day each week, and the same date each month.

Are your overview percentages in the green?

Yes? Well done you, you're doing great. Make sure you take a note of which posts have done well so you can re-purpose them in the future.

If you're seeing minuses then don't worry! Have a look at your content, hashtags and captions and see what you be doing differently. Are you inviting your audience to engage on your posts? Could you be sharing a more diverse range of content? Also make sure you're actively engaging as your account.

Hashtags are becoming more important to add to your posts on Facebook.

When doing so, try and make sure they are written in Camel Case.

This means capitalising the start of a new word.

Why do this?

Well for anyone using a screen reader, Camel Case allows for a pause within the hashtags so they are read out correctly rather than just blended into one.

You also might want to indicate when the hashtags begin, so that the reader can also announce the end of your caption.

Also note that Facebook might auto select a hashtag for you (it does for me in creator studio) as you are typing. The suggested hashtags aren't often written in Camel Case and so I suggest you keep on typing as you wish for them to be laid out.

Another tip is to save your hashtag groups, written in Camel Case in notes on your phone or computer.

I’ve discovered SO many fantastic independent businesses in my pledge to shop indie this year.

I’ve been reluctant to share them on my Instagram stories though because I don’t want to ruin the surprise for my family members to follow me - hi fam 👋.

BUT I’ve just remembered than in your story settings, you can hide your stories from certain followers.

So, sorry family, but that’s what I’m going to do for a short while.

TIP IF YOU’RE AN E-COM BUSINESS:
Share this with your customers. Similarly they might be trying to keep you a secret until after Christmas.

Also remember, that your stories may auto post to Facebook Stories - so deselect that option too.

Indies are for life - not just for Christmas.

As today is World Kindness Day, one very kind thing you can do is make an independent business owner do a happy dance by supporting them.

I'm very proud to say that ALL of my Christmas shopping thus far has been done with independent businesses.

I have also learned that online shopping is surprisingly exhausting!

As someone who used to work in retail, I really miss the personal interactions that come with visiting a shop / market stall and therefore can't wait for shops to re-open again.

So today be kind. Let's support each other through this.

And also be kind to yourself - you will never speak to anyone more than you speak to yourself in your head.

This year we have all made a lot of sacrifices.

Time spent with family and friends, time spent doing the things we love, time spent celebrating and marking occasions.
