🚨 A Word of Caution on Google Ads (PPC) 🚨

AI is exciting, no doubt about it! 🤖✨ But when it comes to managing Google Ads, AI should support your strategy… not run the entire show.

I’ve taken over multiple horror-story accounts, from the days of Google AdWords Express (fully automated 😬) right through to more recent setups using AI Max.

One example over the past 6 months: A self-storage company approached me to take over their account. Following my free audit, they had unknowingly spent their budget on clicks for cardboard boxes, furniture storage, food containers... basically everything as well as what they actually offer. 💸📉 Why? Because the automated system, as well as broad match campaigns with no negative keywords pumped in made broad assumptions. Nobody was steering the ship!

This is what makes freelancing truly worth it. Just one of a number of birthday gifts and some lovely words from clients.

I loved my years in digital agencies, but there’s something special about taking full ownership of projects; knowing you delivered the results yourself.

When people ask me what pushed me to go solo, I joke that it wasn’t just the slow fade-out of 80s/90s music in the office, or the genuinely terrifying realisation that anyone born after 1995 has never owned a CD, let alone a cassette tape. My playlists from the 80s, 90s and early 00s didn’t always land with the Gen Z crowd 😅

But truthfully...the real catalyst was the opportunity to take full ownership of my work and to make decisions faster, deliver results directly, and build meaningful relationships with clients who value what I do. Going solo has given me the freedom, focus and fulfilment I didn’t know I was missing. Sure, I miss being able to hand work over when I’m on annual leave; these days I’m never truly off, because I own everything I do. But the balance I have now is far sweeter.

When you work solo, there isn’t always someone there to give you a pat on the back, so moments like this mean a lot 🙌🎁🍫🍷

After nearly 3 years, Google has finally started showing the search terms that Performance Max (PMax) ads are triggering for. 🎯 This is a game changer for PPC managers! It's still a BETA feature, however, the sooner this rolls out fully across all accounts, the better. ✅

Here’s the reality though…
🤖 Google’s AI is not as smart as Google Ads (or their support workforce) make out - or as many seem to assume. Running PPC campaigns, especially with broad match terms still requires constant attention, smart management, and tight control to get results. 💻💥
