It might feel strange, but if you've written something down - be it a social media post, blog piece or an email - read it out loud.

A simple trick I learnt from my journalism days, it really helps you to 'hear' how what you've written sounds. It's especially helpful for content that has a conversational tone (eg. Instagram captions or blogs).

Try it out the next time you put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard.

Yes, oes, oui, si, da. Whatever language you speak, it's a big fat Y.E.S. when it comes to social media.

Of course it's lovely to see your followers grow (who doesn't get that warm fuzzy feeling when you trip into the next bracket?).

But, and it's a big BUT, more followers doesn't always = more customers.

What's way more important is who is following you and why.

Social media is about finding your 'tribe'; the people who make a real connection with you, who identify with your brand and want to engage with you. Think quality over quantity.

Take a look at some of your own favourite accounts and see what they post, the words they choose, how they talk to their followers. I'll bet they have one thing in common - authenticity.

It's this that shines through, so first and foremost, focus on being your beautiful self. Do that, and the rest will follow.

Here's to all the amazing women out there - whether you're smashing it in business, in the office or at home (especially those who don't feel like they are - I see you 💛💛).

Since setting up Stori PR & Copywriting last year, I've been incredibly lucky to work with some truly brilliant women who inspire me on a daily basis. I love supporting them in achieving their dreams, and am forever thankful for them helping me realise mine too.

• P E R C E P T I O N I S R E A L I T Y •

In the 1980s, political strategist, Lee Atwater, famously coined the phrase - perception is reality. And some 40 years later, it still stands true.

So, ask yourself, what's the perception of your business?

👉 Is it positive?

👉 Is it one you're proud of?

👉 And perhaps, most importantly, is it the same 'reality' as you hope potential customers see?

As business owners, we know our companies inside out and it's easy to assume that everyone does too; but take time to put yourself in your clients' shoes and really see what they see.

Scroll through your social media posts. Look at your website. Read the copy on your pages. Gather any media coverage and go through it as if it was someone else's business you were reading about.

What impression does it leave you with? Is your messaging giving customers the correct impression of who you are, what you do and why they should choose you?

The right words can inform and influence. They can change perception.

Hello everyone, and hello 2021 👋💛

A bit late to the party I know but, like many of you no doubt, the last few weeks just seem to have flown by in a blur of work and childcare juggling.

I think we can all probably agree it hasn't quite been the start to the year we were hoping for; and life is certainly tough for so many businesses right now.

To help, I want to share simple 4 tips on how you can give your company a boost for free through content and PR:

📢 Do you have a positive news story? The media are constantly on the lookout for good news, so think about anything and everything you've been doing. Have you won an award? Is business going well? Are you recruiting? Has your company been volunteering or helping a charity? If so, get in touch with your local papers or online news sites and tell them.

💻 Get blogging. This isn't necessarily a quick option, but it is absolutely worth it if you have the time. Showcase client testimonials, provide helpful advice and guidance for potential customers, explain what services you offer and why you are the best at what you do; use this time to build your reputation and promote yourself on social media channels to drive awareness.

➕➕➕ Enhance your old content. Have a look over past blog posts on your website, and edit them to improve their readability. Think about ways you could expand them too. Google rewards long, in-depth articles that are rich in knowledge and content that provide evidence that you're an expert in your area. The benefits? You'll gain revitalised copy to share / promote on your social media platforms, and it'll also give your SEO rankings a boost - win, win.

🤳 Stay social. At a time when most of us can't see clients in person, social media is a fantastic tool to keep that connection going strong. Use Stories to run polls, engage with live videos, explain what you're doing / what's going on behind the scenes, highlight any services you may be offering, remind customers of better days, and provide helpful advice if you can. Simple, heart-felt posts go a long way.

Ahh the old 'what is PR' question.

I'm asked this so often (even by marketers), and it is absolutely understandable.

It's one of those jobs that often has the Chandler Bing-effect. And with lines blurring more and more between PR and content, it can be even more confusing.

So let's demystify it...

- What is PR?
It's about being strategic in telling people what you do, earning coverage that promotes your services and building a positive reputation.

- How?
By using the media, content and social media to create relationships, build reputation, influence opinion and change behaviour (ie. get someone to become your customer). There are various tools to do this - press releases, media relations, influencers, blogs, case studies and client testimonials etc.

- Why is it important? Here are a few of the biggies:

🌟 Credibility - being seen in the right news outlets for your sector (or endorsed by the right influencer) gives your company instant credibility.

🤝 Trust - consistent and regular positive media coverage builds trust.

🧠 Influence - it helps change people's opinions and behaviour.

💷 Cost effective - in comparison to adverts it's cheaper, plus it's seen as more valuable as it's 'earned' (ie. not paid for like an advert) which boosts credibility and reputation.

💻 SEO - having great content or links to your website from a reputable news outlet (ie. BBC) will give your SEO a massive boost.
