We use QR codes a lot in creating different types of collateral for our valued Customers. They are a powerful way of allowing end users to access content using their own devices without the faff of typing in urls. They are close to the ultimate machine-readable graphic. Many may not realise how many different types of data can be encoded into a QR code…

There have been revolutionary QR code implementations which show embedded images and even crop parts of the image off for artistic effect, an example is shown with this post (respect to Shepherd Neame Brewery for this very creative design).
Two things to beware of…
⚠️ Fake QR Codes
There has been a spate of bad actors applying fake QR codes over the top of genuine urls used for payment portals. Here’s how the exploit works: a user (perhaps in a car park) wants to pay for their parking. They scan a QR code on the landowner’s fixed sign which takes them to a website which has been crafted to look like the landowner’s one but is controlled by the bad actor. The user types in their card details and the baddie steals their money. To add insult to injury, they may get a parking ticket! Look carefully at payment QR codes to make sure they are not just a sticker. You can get mobile apps which let you peer inside a QR code without opening them to see where they lead. We use an iPhone app called QR Inspector which works very well for this purpose.
⚠️ Dodgy QR code generators
Some web-based QR generation platforms charge for “hosting” QR codes! Here’s how this works: they have a database containing your website address matched to a url on their server. When your user scans a QR code generated by their platform their device is taken to their server which checks you’ve paid the bill and if so forwards the connection to your website. Such platforms add no value to the process and are just fleecing money from people. QR codes generated by us point directly to your website, are free and perpetual.
If we can help you deploy QR codes for your organisation, please reach out. Always happy to help.
