❄️ The Road Ahead ❄️

On the way to meet a client, I found myself driving through a wooded stretch on a frosty morning — one of those moments that makes you slow down and really notice what’s around you. Low winter sunlight caught the trunks of the trees, warming their bark, while the subtle greens of the evergreen pines quietly anchored the scene.

What stayed with me most was the road ahead. We don’t always know what lies around the next bend in life, but here there was a sense of reassurance. The height of the trees and the closeness of the woodland created a feeling of calm and contentment — held, supported, and quietly moving forward.

Even on a cold winter morning, nature offers balance, colour, and perspective.

🍂 Nature’s Palette, Anywhere 🍂

You don’t have to be on a mountain trail or a coastal path to find inspiration — nature’s palette shows up everywhere, even in a car park on the way to a meeting.

Beech hedges are one of my favourites. After the fireworks of autumn, they settle into these rich copper tones that quietly warm the winter landscape. When most trees are bare, beech leaves cling on, catching the low light and reminding us that colour never really disappears — it simply shifts.

Winter doesn’t drain the world of colour; it refines it. And once you start looking, you see it everywhere.

🚶 Stones That Tell Stories 🚶

🎨 Walking the streets of Cusco, once the beating heart of the Inca Empire, you tread on history itself. These cobbled roads — a mosaic of river stones and carved slabs — have felt the footsteps of centuries: Inca messengers, Spanish settlers, and now travellers from across the globe.

🎨 The cool blues, warm earths, and muted golds aren’t just colours — they’re the palette of a city that bridges ancient empire and living culture. Every stone has been shaped and placed with care, surviving earthquakes, time, and the constant rhythm of life in the Andes.

This is my final Inca post, in this series - for now! I hope you have enjoyed them so far. 😀

🧵 Living Colour – Tradition in Motion 🧵

🎨 A burst of colour against the earthy tones of the Andes — here, local communities transform plants into vibrant dyes, breathing life into wool before spinning and weaving it into intricate clothes. Every step is done by hand, using skills passed down through generations.

🧵 There are no written instructions, no textbooks. Knowledge flows from one pair of hands to the next, from elders to children, through watching, doing, and feeling the craft take shape. Each thread carries not only colour, but culture.

⛰ Machu Picchu – A view to remember ⛰

⛰ After 10 days of climbing through rough terrain — up and down relentless inclines and descents, across stone steps worn smooth by centuries of footsteps — we finally reached the Sun Gate. From there, far in the distance, I caught my first glimpse of Machu Picchu. I was in awe at how it was created at this height in the most remote place, on such a scale.

⛰ It looked impossibly small from that vantage point, and I still had another 30–45 minutes to walk. Step by step, rounding each corner, the view grew larger and more magnificent. The final turn revealed the full sweep of the terraces, cascading in vibrant lime-green against the slate-grey mountain.

⛰ We had the rare chance to wander those terraces, feeling the cool stone beneath our hands and the wind rushing down the valley, carrying with it the scent of wildflowers. The blues of the distant peaks, the greens of the grass, the greys of the mountain — nature’s masterpiece.

It's definitely a scene I'll never forget!

🍂 Life, death, and colour

🍂 Even in decay, the Andes paint their canvas. These fallen leaves, curled and weathered, hold a richness of ochre and rust, laced with crimson veins and framed by the cool greens of new shoots pushing through. The brittle texture contrasts with the softness of the grass, each hue telling a story of seasons past and the constant cycle of life.

🍂 Out here, beauty isn’t just in the vibrant blooms or fresh foliage — it’s in the quiet dignity of what has been, in the reminder that every stage holds its own palette.

🌅 Sunrise Over the Andes 🌅

☀️ On the trail that morning, the sky put on a spectacular display. The first light spilled across the horizon, igniting the clouds in shades of molten peach and coral. Below, the forested ridgelines still lay in shadow, holding onto the night, while the grassy clearing caught the soft gold of early day.

☀️ High-altitude sunrises in the Andes can be fleeting — the colours shifting from fiery brilliance to cool daylight in a matter of minutes. But for those moments, the whole world seemed painted in harmony: the pale blues of the waking sky, deep moss greens of the hills, and the warm, earthy browns of the land beneath our feet.

🌿 The Orchid That Towered Over Me 🌿

🥀 I’ve seen orchids before — but never one this size. This rare and magnificent plant, towering over me, its blooms curling delicately from thick, sturdy stems, was a sight to behold.

🥀 High in the clouded forests, orchids have adapted to survive in cool, misty, high-altitude conditions. They anchor themselves to trees or rocky slopes where sunlight filters through shifting clouds, drawing moisture straight from the humid air. Their thick leaves help store water, and their roots grip tightly against strong mountain winds.

This one, with its soft buttery yellow petals, deep earthy browns, vibrant mossy greens, and the cool greys of surrounding lichen, felt like a perfect symbol of resilience and beauty in one of the world’s most challenging environments.

🧙‍♂️ Middle Earth Vibes meets the Inca Trail 🧙‍♀️

🎋 This stretch of the trail felt like we’d wandered into a scene from Lord of the Rings. Twisting trees cloaked in moss, ferns reaching from every angle, and the stone path — smooth and glistening — as though shaped by centuries of footsteps and rain.

⛰ There was a sheer drop to our left and a living, breathing forest pressing in from all sides. It was quiet but alive — mystical, ancient, humbling.

⛰We took a moment here to appreciate not just the view, but the history beneath our feet.

🎨 Colour palette pulled from the scene:

🌿 A Riot of Colour 🌿

🥀 This patch of forest floor, a masterpiece in its own right, stopped us in our tracks. A vibrant mosaic of moss, ivy, and alpine flora, with that electric lime green punctuating the warmer rusts and reds like nature’s neon, it's a sight that inspires wonder and appreciation for nature's intricate details.

🪻 There’s an almost otherworldly quality to this kind of terrain, like walking through a living painting. Every texture and colour, from the softness of moss to the roughness of ivy, works in perfect harmony, creating a balanced and unified design that is a testament to nature's artistry.

🥀 From this visual feast, we pulled a palette grounded in the landscape:

Bright acid green, earthy olive, burnt terracotta, and a deep berry red — nature’s version of maximalism.

🪨 Crystals and Colonies 🪨

❈ Tucked into this ancient stone in a region known for its rugged, majestic beauty and its rich geological history, these quartz crystals emerge like frozen light, jagged, glinting, and quietly powerful. Beside them, delicate lichen colonies have crept across the surface over decades, maybe even centuries, weaving their own living tapestry.

❈ This image beautifully captures the profound relationship between the geological and the biological — the hard mineral and the soft growth, the ancient stone and the silent life, inspiring us with the harmony in nature.

We created a colour palette from this photo, drawn directly from these natural elements:
🎨 • • • #949897

Cool greys, earthy browns, and subtle olive tones — a palette that feels timeless, grounded, and elemental.

🎨 These colours are not just a visual representation of the natural elements, but they also evoke the same feelings of timelessness, grounding, and elemental power that the crystals and colonies do.

🎆 Nature’s Fireworks 🎆

🎇 This wild bloom immediately seized my attention — its tiny tendrils shooting out like sparks from a firework display. The bright vermilion reds and fiery oranges against a soft sea of green were a delightful surprise, a perfect example of how nature captivates us with its contrasts and unexpected beauty.

🎇 This moment felt like a celebration frozen in time — a burst of happiness amid the serene foliage, and another testament to the visual spectacle that is the Inca Trail.

Our colour palette from this image draws directly from that fiery contrast:
🎨 • • •

🎇 A fusion of hot reds, glowing orange, and grounding greens — a palette that exudes drama, balance, and vibrancy, engaging the eye and the imagination.
